4 Ways to Handle a Situationship on Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

It’s that time of year again when stores are filled with red hearts and pink streamers are everywhere. We’re approaching the day that every single female dreads and every single man couldn’t care less about. When you’re in a relationship, you and your significant other plan something, and when you’re single, well… you obviously do nothing. But what do you do when you’re somewhat talking to someone (AKA a situationship) on Valentine’s Day? A situationship is a relationship without a label where two people are more than platonic friends, but haven’t committed to being anything official for various reasons. So here are four ways to handle a situationship on Valentine’s Day.

1. Don’t plan anything.

Situationships are generally not serious, so planning a Valentine day soiree for your “situationshipee” may not be a good idea. Whatever you have planned, cancel it. The reason you’re in a situationship is probably because your man/girl doesn’t want to commit, so if you go out making plans all willy-nilly, you may end up with nothing in the end.

2. Don’t expect anything.

Like reason one, he/she most likely won’t have anything for you because you are not in a committed relationship, so there’s no reason for you to receive a gift. Plus you don’t want to get your hopes up and then be disappointed.

3. Drink some wine or eat ice cream and watch an action movie.

Since you’ve canceled your plans with your “situationshipee”, you might be feeling upset about it all. The best thing to do on Valentine’s Day when you’re single is to watch a non-romantic movie. You don’t have to witness any cutesy-stuff, and before you know it the day will be over. And if you’re underage, indulge in some ice cream. That’ll keep your mind off the whole holiday itself.

4. Get into a relationship.

Since you’re not getting anywhere with your situationship, then maybe it’s time for a relationship. Once Valentine’s Day is over, consider ending your situtionship and getting into a relationship. Then you’ll be ready for Valentine’s Day ‘16.

But remember to always love yourself first, Collegiettes, and have a happy Valentine’s Day!
