3 Online Comics That Appeal to Your Intellectual Side

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

I’ve always been a comic reader. As soon as the Sunday newspaper was delivered to my house, I’d be outside rifling through the pages to get to the comic section. Long gone are the days of sterile, dull children’s comics. After graduating from the Sunday strips, I looked into broadening my comic horizons with various topics that interested me. You can find comics written intelligently and comically on a multitude of topics including race, sexuality, and gender identity in a variety of genres, like horror and romance. Being a Collegiette doesn’t grant me the freedom to leave campus in search of comic stores or thrift stores to get my comic fix, so that’s why internet comics became my norm. The internet provides a never-ending comic collection when you’re willing to put in the effort to look.  Below are a few favorite comics that are available for free online.

1. My all-time favorite internet comic is the well-known Dinosaur Comics. Dinosaur Comics is, in fact, a comic about talking dinosaurs, but with an intellectual base that often plays with the English language. The format of each comic is pretty much the same, with the panels remaining consistent but a daily change in narrative. Reading these seriously puts me in a great mood at any time of the day. 2. XKCD is a long-running comic that speaks to intellectual topics like computers and math. Not to worry, not all of them are intimidating; there are some real gems for people interested in other topics, too.  To check out XKCD, click here.

3. Dog House Diaries is probably the most relatable comic in this list. The topics are very funny. I highly suggest perusing through this comic in your free time for a mood boost. To check out the Dog House, click here
