20 Realities of Being in a Long Distance Relationship With Your Best Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

A best friend is someone who is always there for you, even when they can’t physical be next to you. Long distance relationships are difficult, but sometimes inevitable. Life happens, college happens, and sometimes that means having to move away from your second half.

No matter what keeps you apart or how many miles are between you, here are 20 realities that all best friends in a long distance relationship will understand:

1. Texting all day, everyday

From the moment you wake up, to the moment you fall asleep, you are in constant conversation with your best friend. Everything from what you’re eating for breakfast, to the cute guy in your Spanish class, to the exam you just bombed–it’s all fair game. Everything and anything is discussed.

2. But texting 24/7 just isn’t enough…

Sometimes you just need to see her face, so you snap chat each other on an hourly basis. There’s no filter here, the uglier the better.

3. And Facetime

There goes two hours of your day, but well spent.

4. Making extravagant plans

A large portion of your conversation consists of making unrealistic plans that most likely won’t happen. You might not be together, but that doesn’t mean you can’t daydream about what you’d be doing if you were. Pizza and wine nights, coffee runs, nights out–even though you can’t follow through with it, making up scenarios is better than nothing.

5. You’re always on the same wave length

Despite being hundreds of miles away from each other, you can always count on your best friend to agree with you. If you’re down, they’re down.

6. Your best friend’s exciting news is your exciting news

You and your best friend are living vicariously through each other, so you get equally excited for them when anything big happens.

7. Following all of your best friend’s school friends on social media

You’ve only met them once, but they are basically your indirect best friends. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, you follow them on all social media and automatically like everything they post.

8. But you can’t help getting a little jealous

Your best friend’s school friends get her all to themselves, everyday. You can’t help but get jealous of all that hang out time. Do they have any idea how lucky they are?

9. You have a group message with you best friend and her mom

Your best friend’s mom is like your second mom, so of course you miss her, too. Not only that, you get to talk about how much you both miss your best friend.

10. She’s still your biggest fan

Despite being apart, you can always count on her to give you the confidence boost you need. Whenever you’re not feeling beautiful or smart, she’s there to pick you up.

11. Spending loads of money on plane and bus tickets to visit them

You finally break down, and even though you’re a broke college student, you spend enormous amounts of money to see them. You’re desperate, and no amount is too much when it comes to your best friend.

12. Realizing that you get to see her soon

Let the countdown begin! You finally have a set date to visit each other, and it’s all you can think about.

13. And when you’re finally reunited…

After months of torturous waiting you’re finally reunited with the one person you’ve missed the most. There’s screaming and crying: you’re never letting go.

14. You have to plan out conversations

It’s been months and there is so much to talk about. You and your best friend are going to need a game plan to cover everything. With such little time, strategic planning is necessary to ensure you can fit it all in.

15. When it comes to saying goodbye… you just can’t

The weekend together flew by, and it’s already time to leave her. It’s like the initial goodbye all over again.

16. You fall into depression

Seeing each other for the weekend was such a tease. Being apart from your best again sends you into a downward spiral of depression. How did you manage this before?

17. But you remind yourself of summer

The semester is almost over, and when it is you and your best friend will have all summer to be together. Let the best friend summer bucket list begin!

18. You also remember you have the rest of your life together

Sure, you may be apart now, but just wait for all the time you’ll have when you hit up the nursing home together.

19. Realizing how grateful you are

Even though you guys are hundreds of miles away, you’re lucky to just have her in your life. They are your soul mate in a best friend, and you hardly thank them enough for being one of the greatest gifts in your life.

20. And as sappy as it is, being in a long distance relationship with your best friend has taught you that distance only makes the heart grow fonder.

Just when you thought you couldn’t love her anymore…
