15 Things I Learned from My Older Sister As Told by Lauren Conrad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Big sisters are always there when you need them most. From my experience, having an older sister has shaped me into the person I am today. From her insightful advice on my love life to help navigating my college career, I find myself learning from her each and every day. Here are some of the pivotal life lessons my sister has taught that prove older sisters are the absolute best.

1. How to get along with your parents

Because she’s done it all before, she’ll teach you how to choose your battles and how to be more understanding of your parent’s ways. Basically, she’ll help keep the family harmony even if/when she’s moved out!

2. How to share

I can’t express how many fights we’ve had! Although sharing your clothes may feel like the end of the world, you basically have another closet to choose from, which is one of ultimate perks.

3. How to be a good friend

She taught me what it takes to keep the important people in your life and keep those friendships strong.

4. How to deal with growing up

Growing up can seem like the scariest thing in the world, especially to us college students. But while many adult responsibilities loom ahead, my sister taught me that there will always be a home to come back to. She’ll always be the same sister she was to you when you were young, but now you’ll have the benefits of being adults together!

5. How to stay strong through all of life’s ups and downs

She’s taught me how to handle any obstacle that comes my way.

6. To not stress the small things

She’s the person you go to when you need to calm down, or just need a reality check.

7. And not to worry when life changes unexpectedly

She taught me to make the best of every situation, even ones I wish weren’t true.

8. Her effortlessly cool style you’ve been trying years to replicate

An older sister means endless beauty tips, tricks, and advice you can carry throughout your life.

9. To go for your goals

Even when it may seem impossible she’s encouraged me to work hard and pursue my passions.

10. That she’ll always be there for you through life’s milestones

An older sister is your ultimate supporter, which is someone you should always treasure. She’s there to console you on your worst days and jump for joy with you on your best.

11. To cherish the strong sisterly bond you share

I’ve learned to always honor our close bond. There’s no one I’d rather call crying on the phone or hug a little too long because I know she’s always there for me.

12. To travel the world

She’s encouraged me to study abroad, learn a language, and meet as many new people as I can. And no matter how nervous I may be, I know she’ll be there waiting when I return!

13. To respect yourself

When it comes to my love life, she’s taught me to never settle for less than I deserve. She’s helped me realize my self-worth and never let anyone tear that down.

14. To take care of yourself

Through life’s high and lows, I’ve learned to ensure my own happiness. My sister has taught me to love myself.

15. What it means to be a hero

My sister is my supporter, believer, role model, and best friend.
