1. You get to hang out with like-minded Collegiettes
There’s something very empowering about a publication for women that’s run, edited and written by women. Since the members of HC UMass share a common vision, it allows you to feel a real sense of community in what can be an overwhelming school.
2. We love to eat
With sponsors like CHIPOTLE we do a lot of eating. And we love every single second of it. Also, we’ll have candy at all of our meetings this year (if that’s not a good enough reason to join, I don’t know what is).
3. It’s a great way to make connections in the media industry
Our annual Women in Media Conference is really the centerpiece of our events each year. We have influential women in the industry—everyone from former SNL writers to successful authors to HC co-founders—come speak. They always share great advice and it’s an incredible networking opportunity.
4. We’re big on laughing and having fun
Much like eating, we really love this and do a lot of it.
5. Help to improve your writing/photography skills in a relaxed, comfortable environment
No matter what your major is, you probably need to do quite a bit of writing. Research papers and book reviews can get old quickly though. HC gives you a chance to hone your writing skills, but while having fun. You get to pick your article topics, and writing about something of interest can make a world of difference.
The same goes for our photography team. If photography is something you are passionate about (or even just mildly interested in), Her Campus gives you an opportunity to show off your work and improve your skills.
6. We celebrate holidays in style
Halloween, Valentine’s Day, we’ve got it all covered. Many of our events are holiday-based. Sometimes we even make up our own.
7. We have awesome events
Speaking of events, we have several each semester (sometimes on campus, sometimes off). In the past, we’ve had everything from Kickboxing with Eliza to a Neuro sleepover. We’re really excited about some that are in the works for this year! *stay tuned*
8. There’s room for growth & promotion
We have about a 15 member Executive Board with positions ranging from Content Editor to Publicity Director to Business Development Manager. Whatever your interests or major(s) are, there are opportunities to climb up the HC ladder.
9. Make friends
We welcome many new members each semester and it doesn’t take any time at all for them to become a part of the close-knit Her Campus UMass family. I’ve met my favorite people at UMass though Her Campus, and know I’m not alone in saying that. This is a network that will always stay connected.
10. There’s always free stuff
Her Campus Nationals send us lots of HC swag and we get great stuff from our sponsors. In the past, that’s included Aeropostale gift cards, Luna Bars, yoga mats, shampoo & conditioner and a lot more! Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love free stuff?
