Try Something New This Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

While I was driving home from work the other day and listening to some tunes, the radio host said something that made my jaw drop. She said women on average want their significant other to spend at least $250 on presents just for the holidays. Ladies, in my opinion, that is ridiculous. Of course we all want things, it is in our nature as humans. New clothes, gorgeous jewelry, flawless makeup and whatever else it is you just must have. But honestly, you do not need these things. You need food, water, love, and good health.

Now, this brings up the discussion of it is better to give than receive? I have personally done this myself and I highly recommend everyone to try giving rather than receiving at least once in your lifetime. We have over one month of break. You can take a couple hours out of your long break to volunteer your time. Several studies have proven that giving and donating promotes your happiness and good health.

Your local animal shelter has numerous adorable dogs that are waiting to be taken on a walk outside and lovable cats that just want to be played with. You will most definitely feel better about yourself donating your time for these homeless animals. You may even be bringing a new friend home!

The next time you are shopping and you hear the bell ringing for the Salvation Army, you should donate a few dollars. The Salvation Army is a wonderful charity and helps people who are in desperate need.

On a lazy day, go through your closet and donate any clothes, shoes and accessories you haven’t worn in a year. You will clear up room in your closet while also benefitting your local Goodwill or thrift shop.

Try something new this Christmas that will benefit someone other than yourself. You will not regret it!
