Beauty and the Beast: Don’t Judge a Book by it’s Cover

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

We all remember watching Disney movies in our childhood. Whether you were dressed in a sparkly gown like Cinderella or wearing a cowboy hat like Woody, the majority of adults can name one Disney movie they loved as a child, and still do. As all you Disney enthusiasts know, the new version of “Beauty and the Beast” was released over spring break. The official release date was March 17, but the second my sister and I found out there was a showing on the 16, we drove straight to the theater. To make my movie review short and sweet: if you have yet to see it, begin looking up the next show times. According to the New York Times, Greg Foster, chief executive of IMAX’s filmed entertainment said, “The world is a pretty cynical place right now, and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ gave audiences an opportunity to go back to a time of innocence.”

But I am not writing a review on the movie, I am writing to inform all women to strive to be like Belle. While watching the movie, I was inspired to write about how women, and even men, need to stand up for what they believe in. Yes, the movie features an enchanted castle and a talking teapot, but you need to look at the deeper meaning. Belle focuses on the inner beauty of things and looks past the outer appearances. Most importantly, never judge a book by its cover. Just because someone is different, do not shut them out. Rather, respect the differences among yourselves because diversity is what makes each person unique and exceptional.

This leads me to my next component, never settle, and do not accept the bare minimum. The pressure is even more alarming while the majority of your peers are reaching milestones such as becoming engaged, walking down the aisle and having children. Regardless of what society is putting in your mind, there is absolutely nothing wrong with refusing to settle and raising your standards. If you have been told your standards are too high, then who cares. You deserve to wait for what you truly desire.

The main point I am trying to emphasize is to be you and only you. Do not live up to society’s expectations just to impress someone. Be independent, fearless and patient. Make an effort to see the beauty in all things, even the tiniest things that spread a smile across your face. I understand everyone’s story is different and we all are fighting battles some may not ever be able to comprehend, but stay focused on what makes you feel content. For instance, in this moment right now you can name several things that bring you to a smile. Even with life’s constant struggles and triumphs, you can reflect on memories and feelings that touched your heart. Nothing in life will ever be perfect. But you certainly can aim for being the best person you possibly can.
