The Scariest Show on Television: American Horror Story

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

With Halloween being over it is time to move on to happier and more holiday friendly things—but not for all…well, at least for another five weeks.  There are still five episodes remaining for the biggest show on television right now, which is FX’s American Horror Story: Freak Show.  AHS has had the highest rated show on Wednesday nights for the past four years, captivating audiences with their intricate story lines and racy scenes that always pushing the limit to what can be shown on television.

The hype over this show has not slowed down since the premier back in 2010.  It could be a factor that each new season is a new story line, not connected at all to the previous seasons. This entices people to watch because most viewers do not have to be committed to the show since day one. This is usually a turn off for most people who would like to start a show, but not if it’s into it’s four season already!

I wanted to get other people’s opinions on why AHS has such a huge following and what keeps drawing people back to the “scariest” show in TV right now. When I asked here at the University of Iowa sophomore Margret Mineman answered, “AHS is what I look forward to the most on TV all year. You can always rely on AHS to show you the most messed up stuff that makes you think about it days after—that makes me keep tuning in on it ever Wednesday night.”

This idea contributes a lot to the hype of the show—the messed up and most disgusting situations one could think off take place in each scene.  Writer of the show, Jennifer Salt was quoted saying, “We writers sit in a room and think of the scariest situations one could be in and we just go with it.  Then a few days later we come back to that same situation and think of a way to make it 10x worse.”  This idea has really come out in this current season of “Freak Show.”  They incorporated most people’s fear of clowns into a character named Twisty the Clown. Just look at his face below, how can one not be scared of that!!!

Chloe Blick, also a sophomore here at Iowa said, “I watch this show because it offers something for everyone.  You have a haunted house season one, an asylum season two, coven season three and freak show season four.  It has covered four areas of settings that have shown up in everyone’s nightmares before allowing all of us to relate something that has haunted us before.”

AHS is the only show on TV that gives you the scary movie feel. Every time a horror movie comes out people, for some reason, are drawn to it the scarier it is.  American Horror Story has found this formula of having a great story line, A-list actors and tons of spin shivering moments.  If one has not yet tuned into this Emmy Award winning show, tune in Wednesday nights on FX at 9:00 p.m. You can catch the first two season now streaming on Netflix.
