Janie Myers: The Epitome Of Dedication

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Meet your local celeb: Norwalk native, senior Janie Myers! Whether it’s hitting the books or hitting the floor at Universal Dance Association (UDA) nationals, Myers takes beauty and brains to a whole new level. Now In the midst of her fourth year on the University of Iowa dance team, Myers has learned the true definition of time management. From weekly lifting, practice and public appearances to representing Iowa at UDA nationals, being a division one dancer keeps her extremely busy. As if that wasn’t already enough, she is human physiology (B.S.) major on the pre- physician’s assistant track. When she’s not carrying poms or at the library with her nose in a textbook, she might be spotted wearing a lab coat. On top of her commitments as a student-athlete, she has taken on a job at a translation cardiovascular physiology lab under Dr. Pierce. Talk about a go-getter. Let’s get to know her a little bit better.

So, what’s a typical week in the life of Janie Myers?

“More time than not, I’m studying or doing homework. Otherwise I’m in class, at practice, lifting a game, work or at a public relation event. So normally Tuesday and Thursday are my busiest days. I lift for an hour, have practice for three and a half hours and then also have class for an hour and a half. Then on Thursdays I have a lab meeting for work for about an hour. All other days I have class and work with the occasional public relations event for dance team. On the weekends there are normally games and even more public appearances and events.”

How do you keep it all straight?

“My planner is my life. I check it probably five times a day. I also plan weeks in advance for things coming up to make sure I have plenty of time to get ready for exams or events. “

Biggest challenge you face on a weekly basis?

“Probably is staying focused when I need to do homework after having a tiring practice, or not getting a ton of sleep.”

How do you deal?

“Although dance team keeps me so busy, it’s always a stress reliever to do what I love and hang out with my team. Additionally, sometimes I go on ice cream dates with my old roommates to catch up and take a break. Spending time with my boyfriend also helps me stay stress free. But, most importantly face timing with my two nieces and nephew is the best stress relief of them all.”

What’s in it for you?

“Dance has been my passion since I was three years old, so what really makes it all worth it is being someone that little Hawkeye fans can look up to. That’s been my favorite part of games and events and definitely the most rewarding aspect of it all.”

While simply reading about her schedule may have you feeling like you need a nap, Myers gives 110% while never losing an ounce of passion, making her a great ambassador for the university and an even better role model. Round of applause for this week’s Campus Celebrity!
