How to Make the Best of Your Winter Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

As we all know, winter break is the time of the year where you can go home, drink hot cocoa, and give up your “adulting” duties for a short time while your mom cooks every meal, does your laundry, and makes sure your sheets are nice and clean to sleep in.  This break is much needed after a long last three weeks of tests, papers, projects, and studying after Thanksgiving. Here are some tips on how to make the most of your break, so you can at least do a little more than just spend the entire 30 days in your bed watching Netflix (not saying a couple days is bad though).

Recoup from the semester

This is the time to simmer down from the intense, chaos-filled semester you just had.  No homework to think about, no laundry, no grocery shopping (if you’re staying home). It’s the time to sit back and relax. Catch up on your Netflix series that you have fallen behind on because of too much studying, check out some new Pinterest ideas, read some blogs that you find interesting, or watch some football (GO HAWKS!). Take full advantage of your lack of schoolwork and relax, relax, relax.

Visit people

You have a whole month off, so take a couple days to visit the important people in your life that you haven’t seen in awhile. Go visit Grandma and Grandpa or your best friend from high school that goes to a school three hours from you. Sit back, tell some stories, and you’ll find yourself with an afternoon full of laughter. These reunions are so special!

Workout

Maybe the finals grind has gotten you out of your workout routine, and you’ve had a few too many late night pizzas to help you stay up. Now’s the time to get back into a routine to start out the next semester right.

Shop!

So yeah you may have just gotten a bunch of gifts but maybe not all that you wanted. Or maybe Mom and Dad gave you money because they weren’t sure what you would like. GO out and find those post-Christmas deals (yes they’re a thing) and treat yo’ self.

Work

It’s break, I know, you’re not suppose to work, but trust me, the month can get long, and Mom might like your time at home a little more than you would like.  Picking up a couple shifts at your local diner you used to work at or babysitting a couple days can be an easy way to get some extra cash and also get you out of the house a bit.

Go outside

Enjoy the winter season and do some fun outdoors activities. It’s a great way to spend some quality time with the fam and get some fresh air.

Your break is your break. Go out, enjoy family time, relax, and eat lots of food.  Hope everyone has a great one!
