Great Ways to Utilize the CRWC Rec Center

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

With the colder weather coming around, we all know that it is going to take a bit more of an effort to get over to the CRWC. Once there, you want to make sure to use the time you have to get the best possible work out. The rec center here at Iowa has some of the best offers when it comes to different classes, personal trainers and top notch equipment compared to other campus rec centers.  Here are some great tips and answers to common questions about the rec that will help you best utilize it!

What are the hours of the Rec Center and what are the best times to go?

Monday through Friday the building is open from 5:30 a.m. till midnight, the weekend hours are 7:00 a.m. till midnight.  According to the rec center’s top trainer, Kayla Melick, “I believe that the best hours to go to the gym is in the morning between 7 a.m. till 11, then again from 2 to 4.”  These are the times in the day when the gym is least busy.  This would be a great option for people that maybe are not too comfortable working out in front of other people or do not like an overcrowded gym.

If you had one hour available to go to the gym, what would be the best workout one can do?

There are so many different ways to work out but according to Melick she says, “Definitely if you are on a time crunch, mix a little cardio with strength training.  It really all depends on the person, but the first thing everyone should do is start with 10 minutes of cardio no matter what.”  When it comes to choosing what type of cardio to do, make sure to mix it up.  One day, run around the track the rec has on the 3rd floor, then the next day use the elliptical machine or the various rowing machines placed around.  For strength training there are many ways to accomplish this.

According to Melick, “Kettle Bells are seen as a huge benefit and one of the best ways to build up your strength.”  These kettle bells are located in each activity room on the 3rd floor where there are different sizes and weights for each one.  Once you found the weight you prefer start doing kettle bell swings like the pictures below!!

What are some great classes and programs offered here at the Rec?

The most popular class that they offer at the rec would have to be Crossfit.  It covers strength, cardio, toning, flexibility and endurance.  This 60 minute class will be one of the best and hardest workout that you can do.  There is still time to sign up for the next upcoming session of Crossfit! It is $60 for the whole one month session but don’t worry, you can UBILL this! These classes are taught by the rec center professional trainers such as Melick who is running the next upcoming session!

Other great features offered at the Rec Center!

Other great ways to utilize the Rec Center is the lap pool, jacuzzi, rock climbing wall and the sauna and steam room.  The sauna and steam room are personally my favorite feature when it comes to the Rec.  Many people do not know that the rec has them, so they aren’t really crowded.  Located next to the pool, it is one of the best ways to relax after a hard workout!

Before we know it, the holidays will soon be here and that means A LOT of homemade food! Make sure to keep your healthy body and lifestyle up by stopping by the rec center and getting in a great workout.  The CRWC is one of the newest and nicest additions here on campus, so make sure to utilize it and take advantage of the many different programs they offer!
