Devin Francis, A Finer Women

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

I like to say that Devin is my favorite Zeta from the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, a class act, a friend I hope never to lose. Devin in her second year alone has accomplished more than someone has done in four. She created her Multicultural Initiatives position for the Homecoming 2017 Administrative team as she was finishing her previous position, and she became a captain for On Iowa after being a leader for one year. Her spirit radiates for miles, and if you don’t laugh in the first five minutes of being in her presence, then you have no sense of humor.

Hometown: Colo, Iowa

Year: Sophomore

Major: African American Studies with Pre-law track/ Minoring in American sign language

Why did you choose the University of Iowa?

A lot of people she looked up to and knew that were successful in their careers went to the University of Iowa. “My dentist is cool, and he went to Iowa.”

What pushed you to make the decision for American Sign Language as your Minor?

I that individuals who have to speak American Sign Language are a marginalized and ultimately undermined group.

What are you involved in on-campus?

I participate in Homecoming, BSU, IOWA EDGE, Zeta Phi Beta Inc. and On Iowa! On the Homecoming Council, I’m a part of the Administrative team as the Multicultural Initiatives Directors where I am working to instill one of Iowas values, Inclusion, throughout my events during the Homecoming week at the beginning of October 2017

What would be your greatest accomplishment so far in college?

As small as it may be to anyone else I would say changing my major. I finally found out what I wanted to do in my life, which was a fulfilling moment to me.

What do you want to do with your major?

I plan to use my Pre-Law Tract to become a Civil Rights Attorney and one day work for the ACLU. A Non-Profit that operates in the courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to all people in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States.

Who would you say is your biggest supporter?

Betty wop..my mom.. she encourages me to do what I want to do, nothing that will make her look better for her status. She pushes me towards doing things that give me a fulfilling life, and I appreciate that she is always there for me. She jokingly says it’s okay if I fail as long as I get to stay on the couch.

What are you passionate about?

I love seeing people progress, and my major helps with that. It amazes me to see how people progress in life.

If you could throw any party, what would the theme be and who would it be for?

The party would be for Queen Bey herself, Beyoncé, and her babies! The name would be the “University of Iowa Beyonce Baby Shower.” It would be super lit. The minimum gift requirement would be $500, and it’s a black tie event. The University of Iowa presents Black Tie Baby Shower for Beyoncé Knowles.

If you had to choose to live without one of your five senses, which one would you give up?

Smell because I can barely smell on a day to day basis. It’s a useless sense as it is, and I feel I have already partly lost it anyway.

What would you name the autobiography of your life?

Shook an Autobiography of Devin Francis

I am Emon Collazo a Junior here at the Univeristy of Iowa studying Health and Human Physiology with a Health Promotion tract. I would like to say that I am always studying but honestly I am probably doing my makeup.
