Dedicate This Valentine’s Day To Yourself

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

For Valentine’s Day, naturally you think of hearts, romance and fluff. But have you ever thought about dedicating that day to yourself? For all you single pringles out there, being alone on this day isn’t terrible at all.

It’s so important to know your worth and know that every single human being out there is amazing in their own way. Wouldn’t it be awesome if people gave themselves more credit? Not that anyone needs Valentine’s Day as an excuse to indulge in some “me time,” but I’m here to explain why it’s perfectly alright if you’re spending this day alone and how to practice self-love.

Accepting yourself is a challenge. Everyone has personal obstacles to overcome and that’s totally fine, but maybe it’s a good idea to take a little time out of your day, to see the little things that you love about yourself. This is not only for Valentine’s Day, but this should be an everyday practice. Look at yourself in the mirror and find one thing you love about yourself. It could be your smile, your passion for a hobby or even the way you play an instrument. Find something and learn to love that part of you.

Embrace the flaws too. Without your flaws, you wouldn’t be you. It’s as simple as that. It’s time people understood that nobody is perfect. Not everyone is going to like you, and that’s okay because everyone is different. The moment you start accepting yourself and accepting the fact that you’re different than others around you is the moment you will truly be happy with yourself. Stop trying to impress others and only do what’s best for you.

Know that you’re an independent woman who isn’t depending on anyone to have a great time. It just means that you’re able to hold your ground and achieve things on your own. It also means that you’re perfectly capable of finding yourself in this big scary world, and that is something to be proud of. It’s not easy to figure life out, but know that you’re doing a great job at it.

Also know that it is okay to say no to something. It may not always be the easiest because you want to be a good friend, but if it’s something you’re not comfortable with, it’s perfectly alright to put yourself first. Be a little selfish and take care of yourself before you do the same for others. Make yourself a priority and you’ll end up being much more helpful to the people around you.

Self-love activities to do on Valentine’s Day:

1. Go shopping

I’m guilty of doing this, almost all the time, but I think on this day you deserve to treat yourself and go out on a shopping spree. Whether it’s from the comfort of your own room, or stepping out to find something cute, you should do it! Shop for something you feel confident and awesome in, it really does help. It boosts your confidence and a little shopping never hurts anyone (except your bank account… but you should let it slide for one day.)

2. Do something spontaneous

Do something spontaneous! Take that dance class at the rec, or go on a late-night adventure with friends. Make it a movie night, or make a new dish. It’s never too late to make plans, and the spontaneous ones are truly the best ones.

3. Spend time with your gal pals

Spending time with friends is another way to spend your day, because there’s nothing better than having a sleepover with a couple of your close friends huddled under a blanket watching something like High School Musical. There’s nothing better than having your girls over, supporting each other and throwing nonstop compliments at each other. If Valentine’s Day is a holiday to celebrate love, why not show your friends how much you love them? Girl power is the best kind of power.

4. Have some R&R time

You can also use some time to give yourself a spa day. Have a bathtub? Use it! Light some candles, put in some bubble bath and relax. Or put on a face mask and jam to music that makes you feel like a boss. After that, I think it’s only fair if you order food from your favorite restaurant, kick back and watch some Netflix. Now that looks like a plan to me.

Have I convinced you yet? I know I’ll be grabbing yummy food and pampering myself. You should do the same! Happy Valentine’s Day and may your day be full of smiles!
