5 Easy Ways to Stay Energized On Long Class Days

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Sitting through back-to-back classes can quickly burn anyone out, and most full time students know the struggle of wishing for a less hectic schedule. If you find yourself dying for a cup of coffee in the middle of the day or counting down the minutes until you can nap, try out some of these simple ways to give yourself the boost of energy you need for your worst days.

1. Ditch the sweats

I know, I know, you feel attached to the insanely comfy sweatpants and sweaters you religiously wear on early class days, but your comfiest clothes can be a constant reminder of how badly you want to curl up in a ball and go to sleep. Save them for a lazy day, and try wearing something that makes you feel pretty and, most importantly, awake! When you look your best you feel your best, too!

2. Stay on your feet

It’s not a secret that walking to class is not the most tempting option, especially on cold or rainy days when the bus seems like the only way to go. However, skipping public transportation a few days a week can help you to stay active and refreshed. You won’t have to deal with waiting for packed Cambuses, either! Fresh air and exercise will always be good for you, not to mention the extra pounds you could be dodging just by going to class. Plus, walking might just make you realize how beautiful your campus is!

3. Choose water over coffee

Coffee is a lifesaver for rough mornings, or staying awake while writing a midterm paper, and we’ve all experienced its magic firsthand. Drinking too much coffee, though, will eventually slow you down and leave you in an afternoon slump. Drinking lots of water throughout the day will keep your mind and body running smoothly in a much healthier way than caffeinated drinks ever will. Water is also free and easy to carry around…who could complain!

4. Don’t forget headphones

Those little breaks in between classes can make your day seem a lot longer than it really is. Bring headphones to keep yourself at least a little bit entertained while walking to and from class. Your favorite band is always sure to boost your mood, and music will help to keep you awake, too!

5. Reward yourself

Whether it’s with a night out with friends or binge watching Netflix, having something to look forward to after your seemingly never-ending day of classes can totally make time feel like it’s passing faster! As long as you make sure not to spend all of your time in class thinking about your plans for the night, a little motivation to get through the day could be just what you need.
