4 Ways To Winterize Your Makeup This Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Like it seems to every year, winter will creep up on us before we know it. And with the new season comes new makeup! About a month ago I wrote about transitioning makeup for fall, and while makeup can be similar in the winter—dark lips, bronze eyes—here are a couple of ways to mix it up!

1. Foundation

First up, it’s time to switch out the foundation. Our skin can take quite a beating in the winter from harsh winds and fluctuating temperatures. Therefore, it’s good to use a more moisturizing foundation to avoid drying out your skin further. One of the best is BareMinerals Complexion Rescue; it is moisturizing due to its gel texture and has a dewy finish, perfect for combatting dullness.

2. Highlighter

Speaking of dullness, the risk of dull skin can also increase due to the drying weather. To brighten up your face, try a highlighter. Apply it in your under-eye area and on the top of your cheekbones. The L’Oreal Lumi Highlighter is great for adding light to the face, it comes in a couple shades, but the “Ice” shade (pictured below) is especially winter-y due to its cool color tones. Take inspiration from this girl’s beautiful winter glow below. While highlighter can easily be forgotten about, it can really be a game-changer for your whole look.

3. Lips

Dark lips are great for the cold weather. To incorporate the spirit of the holiday season, try a classic red lip. While there are many great red lipsticks out there, some of the classics are Nars in Cruella and Covergirl Coverlicious Lipstick in Garnet Flame. Let your lip do all of the talking (get it?), so keep it simple with the eye makeup: apply mascara and smudge on some black eyeliner.

4. Eyes

For eyes, I love super shimmery shadow. It reminds me of the twinkling lights and sparkly ornaments on Christmas trees. My all-time favorite shimmer eyeshadow is Stila’s Kitten (pictured below). Swipe a neutral matte eyeshadow across your entire eyelid, then tap the shimmer shadow on the center of the eyelid to open up your eyes. A silver eye is also great; try L’Oreal Infallible eyeshadow in Liquid Diamond. It has the consistency of both a powder and cream eyeshadow. It looks great all across the lid and doesn’t require much effort to put on.

The freezing temps can be rough, but hopefully some new makeup can make you a little more excited for winter. Use the dark, cold days of winter as an excuse to add a little extra sparkle or color to your face, it’s the little things that make a difference. And don’t forget to give your skin a little extra care and moisturizer. Good luck and stay warm!
