Roommate Pet Peeves

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Delaware chapter.

Living with roommates is difficult to say the least. There are so many little quirks that get under your skin, and on a bad day the sound of them chewing gum at their desks might just cause a full blown screaming match. For anyone whose dealing with a less than ideal living situation, here are a few roommate pet peeves to which we can all relate:

  1. They refuse to take out the garbage.

Maybe you wrote out an actual system for whose turn it is, or figured you could rely on them to remember when it was their job, but either way they simply refuse to take out the trash. You try and leave it until they realize their mistake, or somehow stop being lazy, but when the room starts to smell you’re forced to take it out for them and cycle repeats into the next week.

  1. Their friends are not who you want to spend time with.

It’s hard to tell a roommate that the girl she met in chemistry and has come to love just doesn’t get along with you. Whether it’s simply the fact that she has an annoying laugh or that she’s blatantly rude, you’re forced to put on a smile whenever she stops by while secretly counting the minutes until she leaves.

  1. They take “mi casa es su casa” a little too far.

Sure, it’s nice they want to share their food and clothes with you, but finding them rifling through your stuff without asking can slowly become a problem. They think it’s acceptable to steal your food from the fridge that you spent your last few points on, and you just pretend it’s ok because fighting about it seems exhausting.

  1. Light’s out doesn’t come easy.

It seemed like being on different schedules might be nice, giving you all some space. However, when it comes time to go to sleep, it’s not such a luxury. Trying to fall asleep while she leaves every light on as she crams for an exam the next day gets old after night three

There are so many more other frustrations; from using your makeup, to never bothering to pick up laundry off the floor, but to mention them all would mean creating a list that’s multiple pages in length. The unfortunate struggles of the roommate life are something of which most of us will experience at least once. Be thankful it’s not forever and someday your roommate’s infuriating antics just might make for some pretty entertaining stories.
