It’s time for a social media scrub, colligates!  Sift through your accounts and do a cleanse!  Whether you’re applying for a job, or dodging your nosy relatives, keeping clean and classy Instagrams, tweets, FB posts, etc., are crucial.  Social media accounts reflect the type of person you are- so make sure that potential employees, friends, peers, and relatives aren’t getting the wrong impression from your posts.  Here are 8 tips for remaining intact online.

Think before you post:

Make sure the images, words, or messages you’re posting are appropriate.  General rule of thumb: if you wouldn’t show or tell something to your Mom or Grandma, chances are you shouldn’t be posting it.

Take advantage of the crop function:

Crop out any unappealing items that aren’t the focus of your picture.  For instance, there’s no need to keep bottles of alcohol in the background of a selfie between you and your BFF.

Get a handle on your handles:

Rather than using your full name for your Facebook profile or Instagram handle, change to your first and middle name, or your first name and middle initial.  It may be helpful if you’re harder to find in a search.

Take advantage of the privacy options:

Make your accounts private so that you can monitor who is following you.  Having your accounts public leaves the door open for anyone to view your posts.

Don’t add people you don’t know:

You may never know who is trying to search you.  If you don’t know the person requesting you, decline it.

Google yourself:

You may not realize what you are associated with on the Internet.  Google your name and find out.

Use the “view as” Facebook button:

On the right side of your FB profile, there is a “view as” option that allows you to view your Facebook page from the perspective of someone who isn’t your friend.  Try this- you may realize that some pictures aren’t as private as you thought.

The untag button is your best friend:

Go through your Facebook and untag any inappropriate or unprofessional pictures.  You may have forgotten some of the pictures you are tagged in.
