Midterms are upon us once again.  No matter if you’re a freshman experiencing them for the first time or a seasoned senior, midterm exams have the ability to instill a serious amount of stress in us all.  For those of us that struggle to find the best way to study, here are some tips to help you make it through.

1. Start early

By now, the vast majority of college students are expert procrastinators.  We all do it, but if you want to pass your exam, you should try to avoid it.  It would probably be best to start studying a week or two in advance for your exam, depending on the level of difficulty of the class.  The Q Center in the library holds review and tutoring sessions that could help you get on the right track to studying on your own, too.

2. Find somewhere YOU can concentrate

Everyone studies differently.  Some like a lot of noise, others want to be able to hear a pin drop.  Whether you like hot, cold, inside or outside, you have to find somewhere you can get the most work done.  Many students like the comfort of the library or a study lounge.  Some find they get the most done at their dorm desk.  Do what’s best for you!

3. Eliminate distractions

We know it’s torture but… put your phone away and close your Netflix and online shopping tabs.  Checking your social media and texts breaks your flow of studying, especially if you’re doing it every 5 minutes.  By no means do you have to sit and work for hours on end.  Accomplish one task on your “to-do” list and reward yourself with checking your phone when you finish.  Do yourself a favor and turn it on silent so you don’t hear the faint sound of it from your backpack either.

4.  Study groups: good or bad?

Basically, know yourself.  Are you chatty?  If so, I don’t recommend studying in a group.  It’ll turn into talking about plans for the weekend or what costumes you will be wearing for Halloween and nothing about the anatomy you need to know for your PNB exam.  However, if you’re good at staying on task and like to talk things out, study it up with your friends!

5.  Caffeine

Drinking 5 cups of coffee during exam time is a right as a college student.  Don’t feel guilty.  Just don’t go broke buying it all.

Find what works best for you and your brain- good luck collegiettes!
