A Collegiettes Guide To: NOT Packing On Pounds Over Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Are you worried about having to skip on the stuffing this Thanksgiving? Don’t fear! I am here to tell you that this Thanksgiving you can have your pie and eat it too.

Things to remember during this break are that although we refer to the break as Thanksgiving break, the only day that is Thanksgiving is Thursday. This means leave the stuffing for Thursday!

Enjoying Thanksgiving should not be a stressful time, just make sure to portion accordingly. If all else fails keep this in mind: most of the Thanksgiving sides dishes are vegetables anyway! This means they are low in calories and fat (as long as you avoid excess butter and salt!) Instead of indulging in extra mashed potatoes and stuffing, begin with some corn and broccoli sides. This will fill you up a bit so you dont gobble up the higher calorie foods!

As for the turkey, it isn’t going to as much damage as a steak would, but just remember bigger DOES NOT mean better in this case. By keeping your calories low during dinner you can afford to have that slice of pumpkin or apple pie for dessert! Be realistic though, the smaller the slice of pie you cut for yourself does not mean you can load on the whip cream and ice cream. If you do decide to treat yourself though, a low fat whipped cream is best.

Think about appropriate portion sizes and how much will leave you satisfied. Don’t be greedy with the food; you can always have leftovers the next day. Another helpful suggestion for portion control is to brew yourself a cup of hot tea a half hour prior to your meal. This cup of tea will not only help with digestion, but it will help in filling you up a bit before you feast.

If it is any motivation think about how much work you’ll have to put in at the gym when you get back from break. Have a safe (and healthy!) break! Gobble, Gobble!
