5 Ways to Decorate Your Dorm for Christmas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

It’s finally December, which means the Thanksgiving season is over, we’re just a few weeks away from the end of the semester and Christmas is just around the corner. That also means that it is officially okay to decorate for Christmas.

Since I’ve gotten to college, one of the few things that can cheer me up during these last few weeks leading up to finals is the idea of Christmas. Waking up to a winter wonderland is just about the only reason I can get up for my early classes. So, whether you want to spread Christmas cheer or just want to procrastinate studying for your finals, here are a few ideas on how to get your dorm ready for the holidays.

1. Garland

Garland is perfect to help decorate those boring, white walls in dorms. I tend to go a little overboard with it, so currently the window, walls, and door in my dorm are completely covered in silver, red and gold tinsel.

2. Christmas Lights

There are so many different kinds of Christmas lights, the choices are endless. You can get colored string lights, snowflake lights, or you can easily spruce up simple string lights by wrapping them in garland and hanging it on the walls, doorways, or under a lofted bed.

3. Tiny Tree (Tabletop Tree)

Not only are Christmas trees super cute decorations, they can also be a great bonding experience. Whether you want to cut down a tree or make ornaments with your roommates. Depending on how much space you have in your room, a tiny tree is always a fun way to make it feel extra Christmas-y. Stores like Walmart, Target and even Amazon have trees that are small enough to fit in any residence hall for under $20. And if your residence hall doesn’t allow trees (or Christmas joy) you can always put up string lights in the shape of a tree on your wall.

4. Stockings

Pinning stockings to the wall is the perfect way to add some holiday flare to your dorm! You can even fill stockings for each of your roommates as gifts. You can find adorable sets of four on Amazon for around $15.

5. Christmas-Scented Air Fresheners

Getting a holiday scented candle, air freshener or plug-in is a quick way to remind everyone who enters your room of your endless holiday joy. It’s just a bonus that it makes your dorm smell cozy.

Bonus: Door Decorating

You can decorate the front of your door to show everyone on your floor that you and your roommates are both ready for the holidays and extremely fun people. You can model it after your favorite holiday movie, song, or event. And if you get stumped, you can find some great inspiration from websites like Pinterest.

Happy Holidays, collegiettes!
