11 Songs to Avoid After a Breakup

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Breakups are never easy. Getting blindsided is even worse. But the one thing that kills even more are the songs you hear on the radio that you used to belt out and groove to that are now your worst enemies. You know everyone has a song that is “theirs” or “our song” and now you can’t even listen to it without reminiscing about those good ol’ days.  There are thousands of songs out there that make mending a broken heart 10x worse. Here are 11 songs from the top hits of today that don’t actually help us get through a break up and remind us of those not so precious moments that make it much more difficult to move on.

1. “We Don’t Talk Anymore by Charlie Puth feat. Selena Gomez”

Great song, but can the radio please stop playing this right now? We get it. We. Don’t. Talk. Anymore.

Standout lyrics:

  • We don’t talk anymore, we don’t talk anymore
  • We don’t talk anymore, like we used to do
  • We don’t love anymore
  • What was all of it for?
  • Oh, we don’t talk anymore, like we used to do

2. “Stiches” by Shawn Mendez

What seems like a cheerful beat of a song actually disguises what really is going on here: “You left me broken and now I need someone else to ease the pain.”

Standout lyrics:

  • I thought that I’ve been hurt before
  • But no one’s ever left me quite this sore
  • Your words cut deeper than a knife
  • Now I need someone to breathe me back to life

3. “Style” by Taylor Swift

TSwift is the best when it comes to a lot of things and one thing for sure is her (not always great) uncanny way to always sing about guys, dating, and the unfortunate heartbreaks.

Standout lyrics:

  • You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye
  • And I got that red lip classic thing that you like
  • And when we go crashing down, we come back every time
  • ‘Cause we never go out of style
  • We never go out of style

4. “Still Falling For You” by Ellie Goulding

Goulding’s song makes us want to pull out at all those old text messages and pictures of time spent together and wish it still were like that.

Standout lyrics:

  • Your heart got a story with mine
  • Your heart got me hurting at times
  • Your heart gave me new kind of highs
  • Your heart got me feeling so fine

5. “Die a Happy Man” by Thomas Rhett

This one is a toughie to forget. Not to mention you start tearing up.

Standout lyrics:

  • And I know that I can’t ever tell you enough
  • That all I need in this life is your crazy love
  • If I never get to see the Northern lights
  • Or if I never get to see the Eiffel Tower at night
  • Oh, if all I got is your hand in my hand
  • Baby, I could die a happy man

6. “I Hate You I Love You” by Gnash (ft. Olivia O’Brien)

This just reminds us of that back and forth feeling when your feelings are all over the place because you just can’t believe it’s really over.

Standout lyrics:

  • I know that I control my thoughts and I should stop reminiscing
  • But I learned from my dad that it’s good to have feelings
  • When love and trust are gone I guess this is moving on
  • Everyone I do right does me wrong
  • So every lonely night, I sing this song

7. “Let Me Love You” by DJ Snake (ft. Justin Bieber)

This song is fun and poppy with that electronic beat but simply just doesn’t cut it for you anymore when you know he/she already gave up on you.

Standout lyrics:

  • Don’t you give up, nah-nah-nah
  • I won’t give up, nah-nah-nah
  • Let me love you
  • Let me love you

8. “Cold Water” by Major Lazer (ft. Justin Bieber)

Apparently they weren’t patient enough.

Standout lyrics:

  • And if you feel you’re sinking,
  • I will jump right over Into cold, cold water for you
  • And although time may take us into different places
  • I will still be patient with you

9.  “Never Be Like You” by Flume

All this does is remind us of when you miss the heck out of them and you feel lost. You feel as though you’ll never find anyone like them and start comparing everything and everyone to them.

Standout lyrics:

  • How do I make you wanna stay?
  • Hate sleeping on my own, missing the way you taste
  • Now I’m fucked up and I miss you
  • Never be like you

10. “Please Don’t Go” by Joel Adams

This song just makes it impossible to stop looking at those text messages you sent (it was all fun & games and sounded so perfect) and miss all the small details about them like their smell, the way they made you laugh, and how they used to hold you.

Standout lyrics:

  • Now please don’t go
  • Most nights I hardly sleep when I’m alone
  • Now please don’t go, oh no
  • I think of you whenever I’m alone
  • So please don’t go

11. “Send My Love” by Adele

Grammy-award winning megastar Adele has done it again with her powerful ballads. This triumphant tune that sounds (but actually isn’t) super uplifting actually makes a good point. Best of luck to the new girl or guy.

Standout Lyrics:

  • This was all you, none of it me
  • You put your hands all over my body and told me
  • You told me you were ready
  • For the big one, for the big jump
  • I’d be your last love everlating you and me
  • That was what you told me

Best of luck to all the guys and gals out there who are dealing with moving on from a breakup, you’ll get through this!
