When In Rome: A Study Abroad Experience

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arkansas chapter.

Name: Andrea Anderson

Major: Classical Studies

Year: Sophomore

During the January intersession, Andrea Anderson studied abroad in Rome, Italy. Her major is a focus in ancient Greece and Roman histories; so she really wanted to travel somewhere that would benefit her degree. Anderson loved being in Rome and seeing all the ancient buildings, because there is really nothing like that here in the NWA region. She said that many of the historical monuments were roped off for protection, however, she touched and climbed on everything she possibly could while there. “How many people can say they touched a 2000+ year old temple?” she exclaimed!

While in Rome, she visited all of the main tourist attractions like the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Baths of Caracalla, Ara Pacis and also many museums. One of her favorite experiences happened on the last day she was there. It was a free day and she decided to go shopping and spend her time looking at some of the Bernini art. She enjoyed having the time to just walk around the city by herself and really take in the beauty of it all. She said she only got lost once, and even had to take a taxi! Anderson said that driving past the Colosseum and Pantheon at night was amazing and breathtaking. “You can go sit at the fountain and eat some bread, salami, and cheese while admiring an awesome building that has withstood thousands of years and gone through many transformations,” she said.

Anderson says that she would study broad again in a heartbeat! In fact, Greece is on her radar for 2015! She recommends that everyone takes the opportunity to study abroad in a foreign country because the memories and experiences you will have will really last a lifetime. She absolutely can not wait for her next journey to begin!
