How Dressing Confidently Makes A Difference

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arkansas chapter.

It’s finally the day of that big exam that you have been dreading since you saw it on the syllabus. You have studied obsessively, practically trashed your room with note cards and your hands are covered in all shades of highlighter known to man. You already double checked that you have a scantron and an extra number two pencil. You should be ready to go, right?

But wait. There is something else that you need to be fully prepared: confidence. Luckily, confidence has a lot to do with comfort level. In order to perform your best, you need to feel your best.

Before my exams, I make sure to put on a small amount of makeup, wear a shirt other than the one I slept in that night, and spray myself with a little perfume so I feel more fancy and sophisticated than I am in my natural habitat (my bed). I don’t need all these things to go out in public, but they make me feel like I know what I’m doing. Whether I am dead set on acing the exam or praying that I make it out alive, I walk into that classroom like a boss.

Putting aside your favorite Nike shorts and giving a little more thought to your outfit not only makes you feel more confident, but it also shows everyone around you that you are not messing around.

Okay, maybe the crown jewels approach is a little too aggressive…how about we try a little advice from a children’s cartoon?

Looking classy and presentable in public can be hard, especially for college students who often have to reach deeply into their souls to find a reason to even go to class. One of the best things to do in that situation is to put on a pair of (real) pants and face the world with your best foot forward! In fact, there have been studies suggesting that the way a person dresses impacts their level of performance at a certain task. I hate to be cliché, but the phrase “dress well, test well” might actually apply to you.

I get it, it is hard to find a reason not to wear sweatpants. But when I sink into my favorite pair after a long day I get the overwhelming feeling that I should either be lounging around watching The Bachelor or hiding the fact that I haven’t shaved my legs in a week. Those are not really my ideal test-taking mindsets.

Of course, every girl is confident in her own way. I’m not trying to tell everyone to go buy a pretty dress for every day of the week, consequently boosting your GPA. Some of us might not feel our very best all dolled up. If you are the kind of woman who feels more fierce with her sweatpants and hair tied, rock it!

Above all, comfort is the first step to confidence. Dress in a way that makes you feel like Beyonce, and if you won’t do it for yourself, do it for Ryan Gosling – he is really rooting for you. Now go make that test wish it was never born!
