Too Soon for Pumpkin Spice?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

The other day, I opened my Facebook to a Buzzfeed link posted by my friend titled “Pumpkin Spice Oreos Are Now A Thing And We’ve Tasted Them So You Don’t Have To.” Of course, being a “basic” colligate girl, I nearly fell out of my chair in excitement. I gazed longingly at the images of the orange-cream filled cookies and no matter how disgusting some people claimed they tasted, I immediately Amazon searched them to see if they were available for purchase (for the record, they’re not in stock…yet).

Buzzfeed let the world know about the existence of these Oreos just days after Starbucks announced the early release of their infamous Pumpkin Spice Latte. On August 25th, practically a month before the official start of Fall, loyal customers could ask their barista for a PSL.  Although I’m a bit ashamed to admit how much I enjoy “Pumpkin Spice Season,”  I must say, August feels a bit early for the cinnamon infused consuming to begin. A pumpkin flavored treat pairs nicely with a crisp Autumn day and a cozy sweater; however, holding a hot cup reeking of Christmas while sweating in 100º heat is just no bueno.

Starbucks and Nabisco will probably profit greatly from the sales of their pumpkin flavored commodities, but frankly, it is just too soon for pumpkin spice. In addition to the weather being too warm, people love seasonal products because they can only purchase them for part of the year. When the availability of the product expands, however, the item becomes less special as consumers have more time to stock up. Just take Halloween candy for example: if CVS stocks candy in a jack-o-lantern display starting in July, is that candy really any different than normal candy?

At the end of the day, although I am the epitome of a pumpkin spice fanatic, companies need to chill with their expansion of pumpkin spice. If they don’t, other basic betches like me will cease to cherish their first PSL sip of the season.
