Spring 2012 Fashion Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

Spring break is over and you’re probably in a slump wondering where summer is and why you have so much homework to do until then. You may not be partying it up in Cancun anymore, but there is no reason to put those spring break clothes away! It’s officially springtime and the weather is beautiful. What better way to enjoy it than to rock your cutest sundresses, sandals, and cut-offs both on and off campus. Here are the five biggest fashion trends of the season:

5. Colorful Boat Shoes
I wouldn’t classify myself as preppy, but this spring I am all for boat shoes—especially colorful and printed ones. Whatever your favorite color – pastel, neon or primary – I’m sure it’s available. For you Sperry lovers, check out the Sperry Top-Sider Women’s Montauk Shoe in Green/Navy/White. If you’re not ready to shell out the big bucks, try the floral canvas style ASOS MILO Boat Shoes with Laces.

4. If It’s Not Neon, It Can’t Be On
Well, not really, but neon is definitely a huge trend this spring – on dresses, skinny jeans, shorts, etc. When it’s done right, neon is bright, chic, and super cute. If you’re afraid of neon clothing (hey, some people just prefer softer hues) try neon color block accessories such as bangles, wedges or purses.

3. Drop Waist Dresses and Tunics
Drop waist dresses and tunics are comfy chic. They are comfortable enough to wear for a long period of time, and can be worn in both casual and dressy settings. Try them in solids or patterns, with cute sandals or pumps. However you wear it, it can look cute. I love the House of Fraser Linea Drop Waist Dress. It could easily be worn with a cute pair of nude heels for a night out or for work. Pair it with wedged sandals for a summer night out on the town.

2. Bright Blazers
I know I’ve mentioned blazers before, but seriously, they’re wonderful. Dress up your every day style with a bright blazer over a crisp button down, skinny jeans and boot or flats. Add heels and a statement necklace for Girls’ Night Out. One bold new color for the spring is fuchsia. Don’t be afraid to be a little adventurous with colors, as they are all the rage this season.

1. Colored Denim

Sure, dark wash skinny jeans look fabulous, but this spring, try colored denim. It adds a nice pop of color – a new twist on a classic outfit. I am partial to hot pink or mint colored denim this season, but they come in all colors. This look works regardless of your style – from preppy to hipster, grunge to girly. Pair it with heels to dress up the look, or a cropped top and sandals for class. Choose the color you like best and add your favorite accessories and Voila! You have a unique, colorful outfit to help you make it through your least favorite class.
