Power to the Pixie: 5 Reasons to Try a Pixie Cut This Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

When it comes to lopping off one’s locks and embracing a new ‘do, maybe I’m biased—okay, I’m definitely biased. The decision to cut off eight inches of my hair last summer was one of the most liberating choices I’ve ever made. I went in to my appointment expecting a trim and walked out with an unexpected new style, leaving the majority of my hair on the floor of the salon. Although my stylist was nervous, I didn’t freak out or regret my decision at all. I was thrilled, and I’ve loved my hair ever since. If you’ve been thinking about taking the plunge and getting a pixie cut, here are 5 reasons you should try it out:

1.       It’s extremely low maintenance

We’re college students—of course this is the first reason on the list. And it’s not low-maintenance in an “I’ve given up on my life” sort of way—please keep the UGGS and mom jeans in your closets. Pixie cuts are easy in a chic, on-trend way. They take 5 minutes to style—all you need is hairspray and a bit of pomade. Imagine how much more time that would give you to sleep in…

2.       They’re super unique!

Although the look is definitely gaining popularity, it’s still a fairly uncommon haircut, especially on Tulane’s campus. It’s always fun to have something different!

3.       Accessories are way more fun

Once you chop all your hair off, everything just looks cuter. Hats are easily pulled off, dangly earrings are actually visible, and makeup is more noticeable when you aren’t hiding behind your hair.

4.       Hilarious celebrity comparisons

This is one of the most unexpected and funny parts about having short hair. Maybe it’s because they’re still relatively uncommon, but random strangers feel the need to express their opinions about your hair. Nothing beats a random stranger coming up to you to tell you that you look like Winona Ryder in Girl, Interrupted.

5.       It grows back!

I think this is the most important reason why girls who are curious should try it out. The amount of times people have said “I love it, but I don’t have the face for it”, or “I’d be too scared it wouldn’t look good” is incredible. That’s the magical thing about hair—it grows back! We’ve only got a short amount of time on this earth, and being scared of a haircut is just silly. If you want to try it, try it!

*Bonus: You feel fabulous all the time

Maybe I’m the only one that feels this way, but since the cut, I have a kind of love affair with my hair. It just makes you feel instantly more awesome. Anything that puts you in the same club with Queen Bey, Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, and Audrey Hepburn is pretty sweet.
