How to Celebrate Galentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

First of all, for those of you plebeians that don’t religiously watch Parks and Rec, let me enlighten you on the wonder that is Galentine’s Day. Every February 13th, Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) throws a party to celebrate the women in her life. Boyfriends and husbands are left at home and it’s a just a bunch of ladies celebrating ladies. Often, if you are single, celebrating Valentine’s Day with your other single girlfriends can feel a little depressing and forced. By celebrating the women in your life on a totally differnt holiday, there isn’t any feeling other than absolute love for your girlfriends! Having celebrated Galentine’s Day early this year, I’ve compiled a list of tips for how you can celebrate yours!

1. Invite your guests

Make a Facebook event or start a message thread for your invited guests where you can provide important information as to party location, etc. My Galentine’s Day had around 9 girls and that felt like the perfect amount. You want the event to feel intimate and special and not just a compilation of acquaintances.

2. Make it a potluck

Since most college students are on a budget, single-handledly thorwing a Galentine’s Day party is probably too expensive. Tell your guests to bring a dish and be sure that everyone posts what they will bring on the Facebook group so you don’t end up with only bags of Tostitos and boxes of Franzia. Encourage your guests to get creative and cook up something tasty. Some of my favorite dishes from the Galentine’s Day I attended were: garlic bread, roasted brussel sprouts, lentil soup, chickpea and avocado salad, chocolate covered strawberries and tart lemon squares!

4. Pick a playlist

Select a couple pandora stations or put together a playlist full of all your favoirte women artists. There’s nothing better than hanging out with your girlfriends while listening to Amy Winehouse, Desiny’s Child, Beyonce, Missy Elliot and other fabulous females!

5. Create a signature drink

All it takes is putting some white wine and Sprite in a pretty pitcher to make drinks feel like college girl cocktails. Pour the drinks in clear glasses (no solo cups at this party) and toss in some pretty party straws to make the event feel festive.

ENJOY YOUR GALENTINE’S!!!
