Girls and Football: They Can Go Together

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

Fashion and football seem independent of one another, but once in awhile, there is that moment on game day when your hair and makeup are flawless. Not to mention, the outfit you’re wearing is the perfect mix between chic and “I didn’t try too hard for a football game.” If this moment ever happened to me, which it in fact has not, I would label it a success. Wait… what did I just say? Did I just connect my outfit on game day to success? Yellow flag.

If only understanding football was as easy as picking out an outfit. Having an outfit that says “I’m a Tulane Green Wave fan” is necessary, but what’s more important is understanding what happens on the field. Have you ever waited for the true football fans to cheer before anything came out of your mouth for fear of yelling “DEFENSE!” when we’re actually on offense? I’ll admit it, I do it. If you’re in the same boat, the first thing to know is you’re not alone, and second, you’re in luck. Why? Ladies and gentlemen, I have created the cheat sheet of cheat sheets to becoming that all knowing football fan.

First things first, yellow flag= penalty flag. Now that we have that settled, let’s break it down.

Offense:

Quarterback- They throw things and by things, we mean a football.

Widereceiver- They catch the ball.

Runningbacks- These are the guys with the nice butts that get handed the ball and run for a potential touchdown.

Offensive line- Think of them as the quarterback’s bodyguards. They look like teddybears but on the field, they don’t act like them.

Main goal: Keep getting first downs until a touchdown, at which point you cheer.

Defense:

Defensive line- Their goal is to sack the quarterback. Defensive tackle and ends are within the line, but that’s for the intermediate fan.

Corner backs- They go after whoever has the ball. They are fierce and they are fast.

Main goal: Hold the line of scrimmage (where the play takes place).

When all else fails, here is a list of shoutouts that could potentially earn you points with those in earshot:

-“Pass interference!”

-“BALL!” (means there has been a fumble)

-“Off sides”

-“Pick 6!” (interception for a touchdown)

Extra credit: Just for kicks, turn to the person next to you and say “man, the middle linebacker is the quarterback of the defense” and watch their mouth drop.

*Only use above quote when we are on defense*

I pray I hear more cheering in the stands with the newly formed confidence you have.

ROLL WAVE!
