The 5 Stages of Applying to Graduate School

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

STAGE ONE: Confidence

  • It’s junior year and you decide that you’re not quite ready to be done with school or you’ve been preparing for this moment since the day you entered college. You go online and buy some prep books, schedule your graduate entrance exam and you’re ready. You got this. This is going to be so much better than the SATs. I mean you’re older, more mature…

STAGE TWO: Overwhelmed

  • What do you mean this test is 4+ hour of organic chemistry? How am I supposed to figure out what day each of these people interview for a job based on three clues? I can’t use a calculator?

STAGE THREE: Freeeeeeeeedom!

  • The day has final come! You walk out of your exam, clear pencil bag and water bottle with no label in hand, and the conviction to take on the universe. Forever done with standardized entrace tests, the world is your oyster.

STAGE FOUR: Depression

  • So maybe you didn’t do as well as you thought; maybe you did how you expected; or maybe you exceeded your wildest expectations. Regardless, you realize that even though all the studying is done, it’s now time to relive the dreaded application process. On top of starting a new semester at school, you now have to worry about getting into college again. At least this time wine can ease the pain of personal statements and supplements?

STAGE FIVE: Acceptance

  • Literally acceptance. You finally get that fateful letter that all this work was actually for something and the world just kind of makes sense again. You can move on and enjoy the rest of senior year and graduation, and hey, at least you don’t need a real job justttttt yet.
