4 Ways to Kickstart Your Career Prep this Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

No matter what year you’re in college, it’s never too early or late to start planning for the future. Career prep doesn’t have to feel like hard work, though! Here are some easy ways to get a head start this semester:

1) Treat applying to internships as you treated applying to colleges…. and start searching right now

As we all know, having a couple killer internships under your belt will really help you when you’re trying to land a job you love. So, how do you find the internships that are going to be the best use of your time and maybe even pay you? Finding the right fit is a process, and the more work you put in, the happier you’ll be with the outcome. 2) Make your advisor your new BFF

A lot of students underestimate the value of having a close relationship with their academic advisors. These people are usually very well connected, not only around the university, but also elsewhere, too. But above all, it’s their job to have your best interest in mind! Make the effort to have a meeting with him/her before the hype of class scheduling kicks in, and go extra prepared with questions. If you really don’t click with him/her, just request a new advisor—it’s really that easy. Never pass up the opportunity for a mentor!

3) Revamp your resume

Figure out where there are holes in your resume and fill them. Don’t overschedule yourself, but also don’t be afraid to sign up to be in another organization or two. You’re in college, so take advantage of the fact that you’re surrounded by a lot of passionate, inspiring, and like-minded peers.

4) Go out on a limb with networking

When it comes to making job connections, it can’t hurt to reach out to everyone and anyone you know. As long as you’re following all the right etiquette, you have absolutely nothing to lose. People enjoy talking about themselves and sharing their stories! You might be surprised that even the busiest professional with the fanciest position would be happy to take 15 minutes for an informational interview. So next time you hesitate before sending that email or making that phone call, just go for it!
