Top 5 Scary Movies for Halloweekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tufts chapter.

What’s the best part about October? If you answered that with binge-watching every horror movie on Netflix, then you’re in luck. We compiled a list of the top actual ~scary~ movies to watch this Halloweekend. Warning: this list excludes all of the Disney Halloween movies (especially the Halloweentown series).

1. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

While this movie might not have you checking under the bed every night, it’s definitely a good thriller to watch this Halloweekend.

2. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

I loved this movie. Full disclosure, I’ve never seen the original 1984 version. And most people would disagree with me (the 2010 version only got a 15% on Rotten Tomatoes). But, I still put this on the list because it’s sure to satisfy any collegiette’s horror-moving craving.

3. The Conjuring (2013)

Rotten Tomatoes gave this an 86% so I have a little more credibility on this one. It’s full of jump scares and a must-watch on your bucket list.

4. The Woman in Black (2012)

If you liked the Harry Potter series, you may or may not like this. But, it does star Daniel Radcliffe!! Plus, unlike some other horror films, it follows a good plotline.

5. The Shining (1980)

If you care about your scary movie education, this should be at the top of your Halloweekend lineup. Like The Silence of the Lambs, this probably will not have you sleeping with a nightlight, but it’s a well made thriller full of iconic moments. (Ever wonder where “Here’s Johnny!!!” and the Grady twins came from?)
