Cecily Lo (fondly known by SoC members as Cec-Lo) is a sophomore dancer and choreographer for Soc (Spirit of Color), a student-run hip-hop and contemporary dance troupe on campus. I asked Cecily a few questions about SoC and her own experience dancing–here is what she had to say:

What does SoC do?

We dance…a lot! SoC members choreograph all of the dances, and we have weekly rehearsals to prepare for the show. Our troupe performs at a bunch of events all over campus and also holds weekly classes for anyone who wants to take part in the end of the semester open dance

What are big SoC events?

Our biggest event is our show at the end of each semester. We also compete in Tufts’ Best Dance Crew every year. Additionally, this year we were accepted to compete at World Of Dance Boston, one of the most prestigious hip-hop dance competitions in the country!

What is the best part about being in SoC?

Screw (Just kidding). Definitely being able to choreograph and perform.

What is your favorite SoC moment?

My first show! It was super nerve-wracking and exhausting, but definitely one of the highlights of my time at Tufts so far.

Why should you want to be a part of SoC?

SoC rocks!

What past dance experience have you had?

I was pretty much shmoney-ing* in the womb. Just kidding, but I actually started dance classes when I was 12 after I quit gymnastics.

*Schmoney is a type of two-step dance move

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Performing on national TV at the White House in High School.

Why do you love to dance?

Freedom of expression. Also, it’s an effective mating ritual (or so I’ve heard)…

What is your favorite type of dance?

Contemporary.

What song did you dance to at your first recital?

Fame – Irene Cara.

What is your favorite artist to dance to?

Daughter or The Weeknd.

Note to all Collegiettes: SoC is having their show on Thursday November 20th and Saturday November 22nd. Come and support SoC and enjoy an amazing performance! Also, check out what SoC is up to on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tuftsspiritofcolor
