Valentine’s Day: Single Girl Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Trinity chapter.

It seems like singles everywhere dread Valentine’s Day – the happiness of other couples is definitely more obnoxious during February.  If you’re single, you might even go as far as avoiding any public place on this day – restaurants, parks, even social media, where people can throw around all the PDA they want and no one else can say thing about about it.

But Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to simply be about S.O. (or lack thereof), but rather about the people in your life that you love; your girlfriends, your parents, yourself.  If you hate the idea of traditional Valentine’s Day, here are some ideas to spice it up.

Watch a Movie

Whether it be a funny one, or some tragic love story with no happy ending (to truly show you that love is lie), movies are a great way to escape the real world.

  1. Titanic – you might think that this is a lovey-dovey story, but Jack dies and let’s be honest he didn’t have to (@JamesCameron @KateWinslet)
  2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Kate Winslet at it again being problematic AF – but seriously this movie will make you feel like it’s those we love the most that cut us the deepest.
  3. 500 Days of Summer another love story meets break up story and honestly it just makes you want to date JGL.
  4. The Jump Streets so 21 and 22 aren’t love stories per se, but these movies never fail to make me laugh, no matter what mood I’m in
  5. Marley and Me so this one is a love story – one between a man and his dog which is the best love story you could ask for

Galentine’s Day Thank you, Leslie Knope, for giving us Galentine’s Day – a day solely devoted to our ladies.  Though Leslie hosts hers the day before V Day, you can hold yours the day of instead!  Bake, do crafts, grab dinner, do whatever you have to do to tell your best friends you love them.

Hit the Bars!

Tap Tuesday, anyone?  Of course you have to be 21 to attend the Tap, but what better way to spend this holiday than with other drunk singles in a crowded bar?

Treat Yo Self

It’s never a wrong time to treat yo self, so be your own Valentine and spend the money you would’ve spent on a S.O. on YOURSELF!  But don’t stop there – in true Tom Haverford/Donna Meagle fashion (I’m sorry I kept mentioning Parks and Rec), give yourself a day of beauty.  Go to a spa (or have an in dorm spa, which you can read about how to do it here!)

Enjoy Valentine’s Day, don’t curse it, and remember that it’s about those who you love and love you, and not about whether you have a boyfriend/girlfriend!  XOXO
