Shedding Off the Fat of the Feast

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Trinity chapter.

You managed to see your family and not go totally insane.  You managed to get bombarded with questions about your relationship status/GPA/plans for the future.  You powered through the feast and rolled yourself onto dessert.  You survived Thanksgiving!

While the holiday is over, it seems like those left over cookies on the counter and mashed potatoes in the fridge are haunting you.  The holiday weight is setting in and Christmas is looming, the calories just waiting to pounce.  In an attempt to not gain 30 pounds to stay warm this winter, try these workout tips and ideas to get you to the gym and keep you looking fabulous!

The holiday season is always stressful and there never seems to be enough time (especially with finals.)  However, working out should be a priority.  Skip that episode of Netflix (Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life will still be there when you get back…) and hit the gym – or watch while at the gym because, hey, at least it’s something amiright.

Be realistic

Let’s face it, if you weren’t hitting Ferris daily before break, it’s not likely that you’ll go there daily after break, so don’t try to push yourself to go seven days a week.  Instead, try going 3-5 times; it’s a lot more of a realistic goal. Maybe even grab a friend to motivate you!  If you promised to go to the gym with someone, you’re more likely to follow through with your promise, so don’t be flaky!

You are what you drink

I’m not going to say “don’t drink” (because, lol) but just watch what you’re drinking.  Sugary drinks like Mudslides are super fun but also basically dessert.  One of those drinks can have up to 800 calories.  Opt for light beer if you must play that round of beer pong, and if you’re making mixed drinks, try to pick tonic water/club soda or cranberry juice as the mixy instead of Sprite or Coke.

Run

Running is one of the most sure-fire ways of burning off fat.  It’s a full body workout.  Hit the treadmill for a bit (about 30-45 minutes) at a moderately fast pace.  If you can go longer than that, you probably weren’t pushing yourself hard enough the whole time.  Less time can be more benefical if it’s done right.

HIIT

High Intensity Interval Training.  It’s basically what workout-queen Kayla Itsines made her name on (she rocks – get her app Sweat With Kayla, it’s extremely worth it.)  Here’s a quick 25 minute one you can do that’ll zap about 500 calories! (Disclaimer: this is not a Kayla Itsines workout.)

1 minute, 30 seconds: burpees

1 minute, 30 seconds: squat jumps

1 minute, 30 seconds: pendulums

1 minute, 30 seconds: band jumps

1 minute, 30 seconds: bicep curls with bands

repeat with a three times with one minute of rest
