Ideal Haircuts for Your Shaped Face

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Trinity chapter.

For determining what kinds of haircuts will flatter your face shape the best, you first have to figure out your shape!

Round:

  • Short
    • For the ladies with a rounder face, shorter, pixie styles are super flattering.  Choppy cuts add height in an effort to elongate the face.
  • Medium
    • The lob (long bob) is really big right now.  The wispy, shoulder length hair creates structure to a circular face.
  • Long and layered
    • Long hair that starts layers around the chin is best.  Think Selena Gomez’s hair.  Scatter the layers so that it does not create too much volume.

Heart:

  • Short
    • If you’re a heart shaped face girl like myself, then you probably have a big forehead and pointy chin.  If you’re going for a pixie, go more for an all-around even length – you want the attention away from your chin.
  • Medium
    • Less layers, more evenly cut.  Bonus for long bangs, too (which helps hide your forehead.)
  • Long
    • Long, layered, bangs, curls.  Taylor Swift-red era is the way to go for long-haired heart shaped face ladies.  You have a really defined jawline so you don’t want a really motionless haircut.  The curls and the layers add dimension, but make sure to start the layers away from the chin (so not like Selena’s here.)

Long/Oval

  • Short
    • Stay away from pixies and go more for a bob if you really want your hair off your neck.  When the hair hits right at the chin, it creates angles to a rounder face.
  • Medium
    • Have the hair hit right at your shoulders and be very layered.  This way, strands aren’t lying flat against your head.
  • Long
    • Bangs, bangs, bangs.  If your hair is long, bangs are helpful in making your face not look so long (because the longer the hair, the longer the face appears.) Whether they’re full-on bangs or just side bangs, give them a whirl!

Square

  • Short
    • Layered bob with bangs.  The layers bring the focus away from your prominent jawline while still allowing you to rock a short ‘do. The emphasis goes on your cheekbones.
  • Medium
    • Cut just above the shoulders with super wispy bangs and layers.  The airy ends of the haircut allow the focus to be taken off the sharp points of your face.
  • Long
    • Long hair looks great on ladies with square shaped faces, but try to keep the layers big.  This way, the hairs isn’t collecting in one place at the bottom.
