Towson Tantrum: Tailgating

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Towson chapter.

Towson, the picture posted above could be us but you playin’.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days, you’re probably aware of the tailgating controversy at TU. Over reports of reckless behavior among other things, tailgating as we know it may be over. There have been proposals to ban tailgating not just this weekend, but for the season.  Thankfully, the administration decided not to cancel this weekend’s tailgate and will instead focus on enforcing tailgate policies and procedures with student leaders.

In my opinion, we shouldn’t outright ban tailgating. It’s a tradition as old as college football itself. It gets people motivated for the game and ups school spirit. Towson tailgates are actually tame compared to schools like WVU or any SEC school.  If students can’t tailgate in Lot 14, they’ll just move the tailgate somewhere else like local houses or apartments.  If tailgating was banned attendance at football games would decline and the school would lose money because ticket sales would go down. We’d be hurting the football team and alumni who loved tailgating when they were students.  Banning something is usually not the answer because it might push things underground and make it more dangerous.

Update 12:37pm: Edit was made in first paragraph — the ban for tailgating has been proposed for the season, not indefinitely.
