The Physical Things @ The Recher Theatre

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Towson chapter.

As Towson students, we’ve definitely heard the tragedy that The Recher Theatre is closing.  Whether you’ve been there or not, I can tell you that The Recher is a huge part of Towson History. Since 1997, it has been a “premiere concert venue” in Baltimore County. If you click on “Wall of Fame” on their website, you’ll be shocked to see the number of bands and artists that have played there since ’97. Regardless of your taste in music, I’m sure you will recognize a few names on the lengthy list. One name you may not know is The Physical Things, composed of Bradley Jaymes, Nick Fornoff, Pat Schaefer, Ryan Hayes, and Mikey Hayes. They got together not too long ago, but have known each other for years. These guys are lucky enough to be one of the last shows at The Recher and I got the opportunity to sit down with bassist Nick to talk to him about not only the band, but also this upcoming event.

ML: What was your guys best experience as a band?

NF: Every experience has been great. I can’t really single one out. Because we’re all friends, every time we play together is great.

ML: Can you describe your sound?

NF: All of our songs are different. Some songs are alternative rock, some are pop, electronic pop, and some are funk.

ML: Who would you compare yourselves to?

NF: Incubus, Metric, Shiny Toy Guns

ML: What band or artist(s) would you consider an influence?

NF: Every musician is an influence, considering every song is so different from another. We’ve been influenced by so many bands and musicians; everyone from The Beatles to The Police to Radiohead has had some sort of influence. Even musicians not related to our genre inspire us.

ML: How does it feel to be one of the last bands playing at The Recher?

NF: It’s bittersweet. It’s a great venue and it’s closing is a big hit to the Baltimore music scene, but I’m excited to play there and I know the rest of the band is too.

ML: As a Towson student, do you feel attached to The Recher as a venue?

NF: Definitely. It’s a sad thing to see a venue like that be turned into a nightclub. I’ve been to my fair share of shows there and I have a lot of memories there.

ML: What would you say to fans?

NF:  Come out and enjoy the show! It’s gonna be great and we have a lot planned for this specific show!

ML: What’s one reason people should come see y’all play?

NF: To experience something new. We have a fresh sound and have very diverse songs that appeal to everyone. I guarantee that everyone who comes out with leave with at least one song they love!

So with that being said, take a short walk up York Road on the night of March 14 to see one of the last shows at The Recher, The Physical Things at 10:30 p.m. Chances are, you’ll like what you hear.
