On International Women’s Day, prominent women disappeared from billboards, posters and magazine covers. The words “Not-There.Org” replaced their images.  The disappearance of the images was part of a campaign called the No Ceilings Campaign, which aims to inform the world about worldwide gender inequality. The Clintons started the campaign, with the desire to call attention to the really important issue of inequality.

There is also a video that accompanied the campaign that had Amy Poehler, Cameron Diaz, Padma Lakshmi, Sienna Miller, and Jenny Slate informing viewers about all the inequality that woman in the U.S face. Saying things like the U.S is one of only 9 counties that do not have paid maternity leave; women earn the majority of college degrees but only make up 5% of Fortune 500 CEOs (Crazy right!) In the ad Poehler, Diaz, Lakshmi, Miller and Slate are not depicted instead it is just a voice over, in order to really show the idea that women are not there.  It’s a strong video with shocking facts, a little bit of comedy and a strong message: The world is still not there yet when it comes to gender equality.

While I was watching the video and reading about the campaign I really liked the idea and thought the disappearance of women from ads and magazine could make a big impact because we see these things everyday and never thing about the women not being there. But I could help but think; does it really take a disappearing act to show the world something that to me sees so obvious? We live in the 21st century where everyone deserves equality no matter what gender. And really what would the world come to if women really disappeared?

I hope that I get to see a world were gender equality is obtained. I want to see a world where no one has to disappear in order to be seen as an equal to someone else.
