Studying Abroad: Preparation and TipsBy April 16, 2012 - 11:28am When thinking of studying abroad, the main commitment considered is the time that will be spent at the specific location. However, going to a different country and taking academic courses requires much more work. There is time commitment and planning required well before the expected trip date. Jessica Weaver, a sophomore History major here at UT, experienced this when she applied to study Jewish history abroad in Prague this semester. “Studying abroad turned out to be a lot more work than I thought it would be. I realized I had a lot of responsibilities and had a lot of preparing to do,” she explains. READ MORE |

Taking Back the Night and Taking Sexual Assault PreventionBy April 11, 2012 - 1:36am The flame on a candle is seen as faint and scarce on its own, but a sea of candles creates the illusion of a fire that burns noticeably bright. This was the sight on the Main Mall on April 4 as UT students and members of the community joined together in a candlelit vigil to commemorate the survivors of sexual violence in an event appropriately named “Take Back the Night.” This event, which was hosted by UT’s Counseling and Mental Health Center program Voices Against Violence, encouraged survivors to break the silence by speaking out through various forms of creative self-expression. Events like this one are scheduled throughout April to celebrate Sexual Assault Awareness month. ... |

Pasión de Gavilanes: An Educational Novela!By April 5, 2012 - 2:39am This summer I plan on going on a service trip to Costa Rica. Having only had two years of Spanish class in high school, I would say my Spanish speaking skills are not sufficient enough to communicate with others. Even though I can say most things in a very basic way, I am looking to improve my casual conversational skills. A friend of my suggested me and a couple of the other members of the service group going to Costa Rica improve our Spanish in a very simple and uniquely fun way: watching a novela. READ MORE |

Campus Safety: The Dos and Dont's of Playing it SafeBy April 5, 2012 - 2:35am Think you’ll never be a dangerous situation? College women who are crime victims never think it will happen to them. The truth is, no campus is perfect and The Forty Acres is no exception. Living in the metropolis that we do, crime exists in many different forms and as collegiettes we are most susceptible to sexual assault, especially when we are alone. You’ve probably heard the usual “don’t walk home alone” or “use the buddy system” but in reality, that doesn’t always work out the way we intend. Crazy things happen at parties, especially when you’re intoxicated, and this can lead to sticky situations. READ MORE |

Peeta? Like the Bread? A Guide to the Hunger GamesBy March 26, 2012 - 12:58am There’s something about when a book gets turned into a movie that makes people everywhere become crazy. You get all giddy inside, reread the books so that you are on top of your game, and tell everyone how you knew about the book before you ever set eyes on the trailer. Well, that is, unless you haven’t read the books and have no clue what it’s about. The Hunger Games movie came out this last weekend on the 22nd, and it already looks to be another movie saga that’s going to rank in lots of cash.
