“I’m no campus celebrity” was the first thing out of UT freshman Malcolm Brown’s mouth the first time I met him. Despite his denial, Malcolm is currently ranked as the second-best college running back by ESPN, an achievement that came about by proving himself a key asset to the Longhorn team on the field– but he doesn’t let it go to his head.
“I try not to pay attention to that at all because everybody is good in college and the rankings don’t matter,” he said.
In addition to his love of football, Malcolm also holds family values very close to his heart. In fact, it was UT’s familial atmosphere that led him to become a Longhorn in the first place.
“I was very comfortable with the coaching staff and all the players I met,” Malcolm said. “They also really won over my parents, who were a big part of my choice.”
His family, which consists of his parents, Tommy and LaShune Brown, his brother Keith, his sister, Jasmin McNeil and her son, Mason McNeil, is very close-knit. From a very young age, Malcolm looked up to Keith, who inspired Malcolm to work hard to try to show up his older brother.
Growing up, Malcolm lived a nomadic lifestyle. Both his parents served in the military, so he constantly moved around the globe to places like Turkey, Guam and Washington, D.C. Malcolm believes that moving around so much has given him a different perspective on life.
“If you stay in one place your whole life, you don’t know what else is out there,” he said. “I met a lot of people, saw a lot of different environments and saw that everybody doesn’t live the same life.”
Malcolm has his heart set on the NFL, but also knows the importance of getting a good education. He is currently looking into studying the field of physical therapy during his time at UT.
