Victor "DJ Trey" Gutierrez

Photo by Christine Lew While I may know Victor Gutierrez as just Victor, to others, he is DJ Trey.  Victor has been DJing for about nine years now. He tells me how people are sometimes surprised by the amount of experience he has because he looks relatively young. Victor got into DJing because he is a very extroverted person that loves being in different environments, traveling and meeting new people. Q: What is your year and major??
A: I'm a third year Biology (BA)/ pre-optometry student.
 
Q: What made you want to pursue this major?
A: I really enjoy science, but like getting a little taste of everything. This is why I chose to have a Bachelor of Arts in biology rather than Bachelor of Science. It shows my well-rounded personality. Q: What keeps you motivated and on the right path?

Ayush Behere: MusicHub

A large music library typically requires either a lot of money or a lot of illegal downloading. With the internet making piracy easier than ever, thousands of people struggle to find a solution – including one of our own Longhorns. Ayush Behere, a sophomore Finance student with minors in both MIS and Business Music, is working hard on a project that might allow for a middle ground: MusicHub. "The basic idea behind MusicHub is to fight piracy - something I grow stronger and stronger against every day,” Ayush hopes to one day own his own record label. READ MORE

Dr. Michael Anderson

Dr. Michael Anderson is a professor at UT, teaching classes for the new International Relations and Global Studies major. Dr. Anderson has a natural, easygoing manner in the classroom, but as an undergraduate he wasn’t at all sure that he wanted a career in teaching. After graduating from UVA with a bachelor’s in American History, Dr. Anderson took a teaching fellowship at a private boarding school in southwest England. He had no teaching certificate or experience leading a classroom, but after his first year of teaching was completed, the boarding school asked him to teach a second year. READ MORE

If you ever spend time around the engineering quad you may see senior Diya Liu walking around. You can’t miss her because she may be one of the best-dressed students on campus. Originally from Urumqi, China, Liu and her family  moved to the states when she was eight years old. After spending a few years in Las Cruces, NM, Liu and her family became permanent residents of Texas. After graduating top 5% of her class with a International Baccalaureate degree from Westwood High School in 2007, Liu enrolled at University of Texas at Austin where she ambitiously decided to double major in Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry. Jenni Lee must get her hair done every four weeks, her nails done every two weeks, and a facial once a month. On HD cameras, everything shows. Fox 7 News anchor Jenni Lee is well-known as a broadcast anchor; she can be found on television screens and computer monitors breaking news of Austin. Yet many don’t realize she is a UT alumnus, and her successful career was built while she was still in college. Lee, a native of Dallas, received her bachelor’s in Journalism from UT in 1994. Her college career included an active role in the university’s radio station, a part-time job, and five internships. READ MORE

If you think about it, girls put themselves through a lot of unnatural, unnecessary pain just to feel attractive. From the quick stings of waxing to the seemingly endless discomfort of corsets, the phrase “Beauty is pain” proves all too true – especially in the case of high heels. Sure, a sexy pair of 5-inch heels elongates your legs and makes heads turn, but is it really worth the treacherous walks in West Campus or Sixth Street? For many girls, the answer is yes. And if you can endure the pain of high heels for a night of jubilee, hopefully you will consider doing the same for cancer.

           About a year before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December of 1941, Jesus “Joe” Soto, a 20 year-old young man, enlisted in the Marines as a Private. His ship, the U.S.S. New Orleans, deployed for Pearl Harbor in October of 1940, a few months before the attack             Soto, one of roughly 500,000 Latinos serving in the army during World War II, served proudly in the Marine Corps and found brotherhood and unity aboard his ship. When I first met Jessica Ramirez Guevara she seemed very shy. Now that I have gotten to know her better, I realize that she is not shy but just chooses her words carefully, because English is not her first language. Jessica was born and raised in Matamoros, Mexico, a bordering city which neighbors Brownsville, Texas.
