Kelsey Stewart “Pies” Presidents for CharityBy April 29, 2013 - 7:08pm On Tuesday April 16, you may have noticed an entertaining sight as you passed by Gregory plaza. Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honors Society hosted a Pie-A-President fundraiser where presidents of various organizations volunteered to be pied to gather proceeds for the Dell Children’s Surgical Global Outreach Program. This program is aimed to bring surgical care to underserved children in other countries. Kelsey Stewart, a UT junior, was a huge part in planning and putting together the event. READ MORE |

Bike, Rene, Bike!By March 26, 2013 - 3:40pm The first time I watched Forrest Gump, I wrote him off as crazy after he ran 15,248 miles. I think we can all agree that 15,248 miles really is crazy, but he’s a fictional character, so we’ll forgive him and keep loving the line “Run, Forrest, Run!” What isn’t fiction is 71 University of Texas students riding over 4,500 miles to Alaska on bikes to battle cancer. Now that’s crazy...awesome. Luckily, I was able to grab Rene Castro (he’s so busy he’s just a blur on his bike!), a senior double majoring in Journalism and Theater and Dance, and asked him to share his Texas 4000 journey! Luckily for Reading Aces, its ace is its founder, Brette Machiorlette. Since 2009, Brette has been working to improve the reading, vocabulary and comprehension skills of over 300 elementary school youth. Currently working within the state of Texas, Brette has plans to expand on a national scale. Oh yeah, did we mention she’s a freshman? (It’s okay, we feel inadequate too.) We chatted with Brette and learned about the aces in her perfect hand! READ MORE |
