What I Wish I Knew as a Freshman

By Rebecca Salazar
September 14, 2012 - 2:16am

It’s been exactly a year since my exciting, stressful, calorie-filled freshman days. Looking back, I’ve come
a long way from the deer-caught-in-headlights look I had as I sat halfway through a lecture only to find that I was in the wrong class, or the stink eye I received as I rode the Jester elevator to the third floor. Obviously, there are a couple of things I wish I'd known during the first few months of my freshman year. Hopefully, my somewhat newfound wisdom and sometimes awkward experiences will be of use to all you wonderful Texas collegiettes.

You’re not missing out.

Themed Parties You MUST Experience in College

Whether you’re attending them or hosting them, themed parties are always a lot
more fun than your usual nighttime gatherings. So grab your friends and let the fun start! Toga
It’s exactly what you see in the movies. This is probably the oldest themed
party in all history of college themed parties. But everyone before us has enjoyed
them so I’m sure you will too. All you need is a group of friends and a bed sheet.
Make sure you tie the knots securely! You can find pointers on Google so your outfit
doesn’t fall apart. READ MORE

Find Your Ultimate Swimsuit on the Drag

The sudden turn in scorching weather signifies one thing: Summer is approaching and along with it comes the dreaded bikini season (http://youtu.be/7WLWC4Kj9pg)!  But fret not collegiettes, I, a textiles and apparel major, scoured the shops of the Drag to find swimwear close to campus. Super Date

By Rebecca Salazar
April 25, 2012 - 5:43pm

Every so often there comes a movie that unexpectedly qualifies as the perfect date movie, and I’m not talking about the cheesy chick flicks we all drag our boyfriends or guy friends to see. Don’t get me wrong; If you’ve dubbed yourself the chick flick movie queen and your guy is okay with that, then more power to you, but I’m actually talking about a movie that you and your guy will both enjoy. Marvel’s “The Avengers” opens in theaters on May 4, which also happens to be the last day of classes. Coincidence? I think not! READ MORE

Insta-culture: The Instagram Effect

By Alex Vickery
April 17, 2012 - 2:12am

You snap a picture with your iPhone and you instantly upload it to Instagram, which essentially boxes it up and adds some hipster-y pizazz to it before being exported to your friends across different social media. Now, if you have an Android smart phone you can join in on the craze. Us Blackberry users, however, just have another reason to feel left out of this most recent fad, along with other popular apps like Words With Friends and Draw Something that are not adapted for Blackberry. Now that Facebook has just announced its purchase of Instagram for a whopping $1 billion, Instagram has become a debated topic of conversation among users.

R.I.P. AIM

By Channing Holman
April 11, 2012 - 1:55am

Travel back in time with me. Get home from school, grab a snack, and head straight to the computer. While you’re munching on your pizza rolls, your dial-up is connecting (unless you were cool and had DSL) until—wait—your mom gets on the phone to gossip with her friends. You: “Mom, can you please get off of the phone? I need to do my history homework.” (lies) Mom: “Sure, honey.”

Finally, you’re connected to the Internet. What to do now? Duh, log into your AIM account and chat it up with your girls that you haven’t seen in a whopping 30 minutes since you got off of the bus.

Surviving the Mid-Semester Slump

By Michelle Blam
March 30, 2012 - 2:20am

It’s official. Spring is here.  Let’s just call it what it is: spring after Spring Break is essentially summer, and summer means no 8 a.m. classes and no all-nighters, so I can just stop worrying about everything, right? I wish it were that easy!  READ MORE

Trayvon Martin and the Forty Acres

By Kenyatta Giddings
March 30, 2012 - 2:08am

On Tuesday a rally to recognize the Sanford, Florida murder of Trayvon Martin and the current freedom of his confirmed killer George Zimmerman was held on the South End of the Capitol grounds here in Austin, Texas.  This collegiette was present as many other Longhorns and Austin residents spanning a wide range of age and ethnicity stood in silent solidarity.  This case has been a hot-button issue for weeks spurring rallies across the nation and a "Do I Look Suspicious?" campaign in which a wide array of people (especially college students) are taking part through social media.   Her Campus Texas was there to grab a few quotes from rally attendees.   READ MORE

Swimsuit Blues Be Gone

By Rebecca Salazar
March 27, 2012 - 12:00am

We have all imagined the glorious moment where the wind is blowing in our hair as we walk down the beach and a crowd of people simultaneously begin to sing “She wore an itsy-bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini….” Well, maybe that’s just me, but before any of us can turn this daydream into reality, we must start at the place where the biggest and most important decisions are made: the dressing room.  Now I love trying on clothes as much as the next Collegiette, but I’ll be the first to admit swimsuit shopping can be a bit of a nightmare. Instead of acting like a kid in a candy store down the aisles of neon, striped and intricately cut bathing suits, I find myself questioning the dessert I had at Pluckers the night before. ...
