Her Campus Texas: It’s finally summer! What are your plans for the break?
Alex Soderlund: I’m doing research for the Navy this summer here in Austin with a heavy schedule so unfortunately I won’t be making any long summer vacation plans, although I’ll try to relax from time to time.
HCTX: What is the best summer vacation you have ever gone on?
AS: My extended family on my father’s side always goes to Hilton Head Island in South Carolina every year, so that’s always fun, although my favorite summer trip that I’ve made is definitely when I went to Taiwan, China, and South Korea all in one summer.
HCTX: Being a senior, what is one thing you wish you could go back and tell your freshman self?
AS: Good question. I would say to try to enjoy yourself a little bit more (you’re only in college once) although who knows where I’d be now if I hadn’t had focused so much on school, so it’s really hard to say. I try not to live with too much regret.
HCTX: What has been your favorite class at UT?
AS: Introduction to Mythology. It was nice to get a break from all of the engineering classes with a little bit of story time. Took me right back to my awesome kindergarten days.
HCTX: When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
AS: Marine biologist. I always wanted to do something scientific.
HCTX: What do you want to be when you grow up now?
AS: Aerospace engineer (so I can tell girls I’m a rocket scientist). I want to work on rockets, spaceships, warp drives, the whole shebang. Space is the final frontier, after all.
HCTX: Which fictional character do you think would make an awesome girlfriend?
AS: It could just be that I watched Game of Thrones last night, but I’d have to go with Daenerys. Yes she’s pretty, but she’s also really independent and very smart. She also seems to appreciate men for their intellect more than their muscle size (which is a win for me).
HCTX: During truth or dare, do you usually pick truth? Or dare?
AS: Dare. I’ve done some things I’m not too proud of. :)
