Sex and The City of Brotherly Love: “Just a Kiss”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Grey’s Anatomy  is a popular medical drama mixed with dark and twisted relationships.  Factual show…on the medical aspect, Oh hell no; yet, on the relationship side I thin
k so.  Relationships are more than defined black and white and sometimes we must learn to understand and accept the fuzzy grey area that accompany them.  The show is full of endless thought provoking quotes and it is indeed one of these quotes that led me to thinking….

Dr. Alex Karev gave this advice to his female pediatric patient: “For a kiss to be really good, you want it to mean something.  You want it to be with someone you can’t get out of your head, so that when your lips finally touch you feel it everywhere.  A kiss so hot and so deep you never want to come up for air.  You can’t cheat your first kiss.  Trust me you don’t want to; cause when you find that right person for a first kiss, it’s everything.”

A kiss- there is no greater starting point to discussing relationships than
with first kisses-because after all, they really are everything.  Its weird how you know from the moment you touch lips with someone whether it is going to be sensational or not; if the kiss is going to be completely natural or out right awkward.  Kissing I believe is the only scientific portion of relationships, it reveals if chemistry exist between two individuals.

The above quote is perfect in so many ways simply because it is true; you really can’t

cheat your first kiss.  Cheating a first kiss ruins it- it loses meaning and becomes a motion.  Equivalent to a “hook-up” in a sense.  And there is no doubt that sometimes on a Friday and Saturday night m

eaningless “hook-ups” are endlessly fun but, there is no denying the difference in feeling between a first kiss and quick random kiss.

“A kiss should be with someone you can’t get out of your head, so when your lips finally touch you feel it everywhere.”  Feeling… that goosebump, prickly, hair standing on the back of your neck feeling, that’s what makes a kiss completley separate from the motion of a hook-up.  Isn’t that too exactly what we are seeking out in our search for a meaningful relationship-feeling.

Now grant it, I am a firm advocate in a fun hook-up; not in the slutty streetwalker Pretty Women way; rather, the innocent, we might have had one too many shots way- a quick kiss only hook-up.  These in my personal opinion are a right of passage, something one needs to get out of their system before truly settling down.  And having these as a comparison makes it easy to realize when your having a true first kiss with someone (for butterflies will be fluttering in the stomach).

First kisses should be special- held out for those hotties you really like or are lucky enough to date.  They only happen once with an individual, giving you only one shot at it-so don’t rush them.  Make sure they meet those crazy little girl magical fairy tale standards which you deny having; but, are really sitting in the back of your mind.

After a while, meaningless hook-ups get old (trust me).  I think you out-grow them or maybe grow up enough to understand that while they held the aspect of mysterical fun for a fleeting moment, they are exactly that- just a moment and often quickly forgotten by both parties involved.  The beauty with first kisses is they are rarely forgotten; rather, always frozen in time-‘cause it hard to fail to remember an incredible feeling.

So next time you are debating on kissing someone I dare you to slow down and  think to yourself- am I going to make this a random hook-up or should I wait for the sparks of a first kiss.  And I can guarantee you ladies, a boy truly interested will wait-and just maybe, maybe that wait will make it all the more worth it- the anticipation, the can’t get you out of my head sensation, will never make you want to come up for air when your lips finally do touch.

Until my next bumbly ramble; keep a smile on your face for it helps your heart beat strong.

Love,

B <3
