Makeup Tips and Quick DIY Fixes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Feeling lost on how to apply your new dark purple lipstick without making a mess? Want to cover those dark circles after an all-nighter at the library? I compiled my favorite tried-and-true makeup DIYs and tips that will have you looking and feeling confident in a pinch.

CONCEALER

Have you ever noticed that your everyday concealer doesn’t quite hide that red blemish or dark under-eye circle, no matter how much you pack it on? That might be because you’re not using the right color concealer. To cover up a red spot, try rubbing a little bit of green concealer right on top. The green will cancel out the redness, neutralizing the skin tone. When your dark eye circles come out to play after a night of studying, layer on some peach or pink concealer to lift your eyes and cover up the dark blue color. And if your skin is looking a little sallow or dull, lavender concealer works great to neutralize your complexion.

For general concealing, it can be hard to use a clunky stick to cover up small spots. For more precise control, take an eyeliner brush or any other small bristled brush and rub it into the concealer. Then use the brush to blend it into your skin for seamless coverage.

LIPS.

With winter right around the corner, it’s even more important to keep your lips buffed and healthy. Sugar scrubs work great to keep your lips exfoliated and moisturized. Here’s how to make you own with ingredients you have lying around the house already! You’ll need:  2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of vaseline, one tablespoon of olive oil. Mix these all together and put it in a small empty container. If you want to add a little pizzaz, scoop a little tinted chapstick into it for a pretty pink or red scrub!

And thank god for winter, because I’m more than ready for all the gorgeous dark red and purple lip colors. But these can be tricky to apply without making a mess. To start, make sure to line your lips. This gives a tinted base to go off of. Define your cupid’s bow with an X to give your lips a pronounced look. Then trace along the sides of the top and the bottom, using the X as your guide. Then you’re good to go in with your cranberry lip color, feeling confident that you’ll stay inside the lines without getting messy!

EYELINER

If you’re new to liquid eyeliner, or just not that great at it, I have a tip that will save your life. After drawing on a thin line above your lashes, pat some dark brown eye shadow on top with a thin angled brush. Not only will this soften the look, but it will hide and blend out any mistakes or imperfections.

For the girls that want nothing more than to perfect that cat eye, get out the Scotch tape! Rip off a piece and angle it where you want the winged line to be, then tape it right against your asking. Now you’re free to wing away and make mistakes on the tape! When you’re done, gently peel the tape away and you’ve got yourself a mess free winged eyeliner look.
