Campus Celebrity: Jaycee Homsher

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Dare 2 Dance (D2D) established their rhythmic presence on Temple University’s campus in 2012. Filled with amazing dancers that strive to express their love of dance and art through performances and workshops, Dare 2 Dance is considered the home to many talented dancers. One of these dancers includes Jaycee Homsher. Homsher is a freshman business management major.originally from Harrisburg Pennsylvania.

Homsher is free thinking, outgoing, original and highly ambitious. But what sets him apart from other is that he is able to channel all of these charecteristics through his dancing. While Homsher’s favorite pastime since the 6th grade as been dancing, he also enjoyes 3D art and hip-hop music.

Homsher has been involved in many dance battles throughout the years, especially with his crew back at home in Harrisburg. The crew travels up and down the East Coast for one-on-one battles against each other and other dancers.

Dancing is less of a hobby to Homsher and more of a “lifestyle.” In fact, at his orientation, Homsher got up on a lecture stage and began to dance in front of roughly 250 students. Doing what he does best, the students and those leading the lecture watched him in awe.

“I enjoy dancing because it’s the easiest way to express myself. I’ve never been a good public speaker so if you watch me dance you’ll see my emotions and you’ll understand the message,” said Homsher, “I like to make people smile. I like to entertain people. If I know that someone is watching me dance, I will dance harder. I will continue to dance for them because it entertains them. I like to spread happiness with my dancing.”

In the future, Homsher plans to have his own worldwide studio and brand name. Within these studios, he hopes to teach inner-city kids and misguided kids how to dance. Homsher believes his time with Dare 2 Dance and his business classes will help him reach his dream.

“The reason I do D2D is because I’ve always done freestyle dancing and didn’t have construction. I don’t necessarily know how to teach dance but joining D2D helps me teach in a class environment and also learn the skills of interacting and learning dance from other people,” said Homsher.

His current brand name “jokestar” is starting to rise to the top! With  multiple promotions on social media and his YouTube channel, he is beginning to regulate his viewers. A website has even been put together for his brand. Homsher’s original crew created the “jokestar” brand when he first started dancing. The inspiration for the name came from people’s reactions to Homsher when he first started dancing. Looking back, I was looked at as a joke but I took that negativity to turn myself into a star,” he said. Homsher isn’t awaiting a moment to begin his jokestar movement. Besides the self-promotion, he plans to get connections with sponsors so that with every hashtag of “#jokestar2015” ten cents will be donated to dance programs around the area. Throughout his progression, each year has consisted of a specific hashtag. The year of the hashtag changes every year so that his followers and supporters can track his progression throughout the years.

“I don’t set any limits for myself. I feel as though I can achieve whatever I want because who’s really stopping me? I’ve always been an individual and I have my own brand and I’m trying to push that brand worldwide. I want to try to get notice and I want to help people with it,” said Homsher.

Part of Homsher’s dream is to  help kids build and achieve their own dreams.. According to Homsher, every one loves to dance; it’s just a matter of getting those children to realize that they can do so much with their talents. During a self-interview on his YouTube channel, Homsher expresses his true feelings about what he wants to do with his dreams. He said, “I want to make dance attainable and interactive with everyone all over… I want to impact America with dance somehow. Something bigger than anyone has done before.”
