Campus Celebrity: David John Bara III

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

There are three commonalities among Temple students: hidden talents, a dream and a story to tell. David John Bara III is no exception. Bara is laid back, funny a good listener.. What most people don’t know about Bara III is that he is a rapper, writer, drawer, music producer and sound engineer. Full of numerous creative talents, David is extremely passionate about his hobbies. Although he tries to put school and other priorities before his hobbies, Bara is drawn to his music, “I can’t control myself. Music is and always will be my passion,” he says.

Bara’s first passion was drawing. Doodling when he was bored eventually allowed him realize that his sketches were great, small-scaled art works to take pride in. His thoughts turned into doodles, his doodles turned into words and his words turned into songs. He claims that his ‘small and silly’ poems consist of a list of thoughts that he eventually taught himself to put them into songs. His poems express his feelings, hopes and dreams for his future.

Bara’s pastimes are a great way for him to express himself and portray his feelings, especially through his favorite hobby – rapping. Additionally, he hopes to inspire his probable listeners and readers. In Bara’s songs he tries to inspire his listeners by telling the truth, telling stories and expressing moral lessons that many of them can learn from. His raps and poems range from politics, to domestic problems to past mistakes. After finishing a new song he feels accomplished and excited to share it with the world.

“Whenever I am bored or have something on my mind that I want to share with the world, I write it down and turn it into a song…The lyrics in my songs and poems are always true and I deliver them with the emotions that I feel, hoping that people can either relate to what I say or learn from what I say,” said Bara, “Basically, producing music makes me happy and it makes me happy when I can potentially make other people happy too.”

Not only does producing the music give excite Bara but also hearing others say that his music inspires them makes him feel even better. Bara’s music has been an inspiration to a lot of people throughout his life. One experience that stood out for Bara regarding his music was when his music prevented someone from self-harming. “When I heard that, I was filled with the most indescribable emotion. I felt happy, I felt proud, I felt powerful,” said Bara, “I know that music can change lives, and hopefully one life at a time it can change the entire world.”

Growing up in an unstable and confusing environment for a young teen like Bara made his inspiration in life, life itself. He explained that he has been through a lot, which shaped who he is today and how he got to where he is. At one point in his life he felt alone, hopeless, unhappy and confused. During this hard time in his life, he used music as his escape and get-away. Music helped him through this tough time and continues to be the backbone to his happiness.

Although Bara commutes and works, he still finds time to fulfill his dream of making music. Bara has connected with a handful of students on Facebook and Twitter who decided to team up to work on a new project. The team consists of poets, artists and musicians to work on the project titled “Us Against Them.” Although he can’t give many details about this upcoming project, I had the honor of getting brief information about it. “Us Against Them” will consist of 10 songs, 10 artworks and 10 poems that all focus on the same concept. Bara seemed super excited to talk about this project because he expects that it will be big. Bara has done a few, small live shows but he is planning for many big things in the near future.

One Day, Bara hopes to rap professionally and release albums to inspire everyone. Many have told David that he has the skill and passion to pursue his dream, but he still needs more support to increase his following. To attract more listeners he hopes that his persistence as a writer and producer draws people to want to listen to his music.

“I don’t want to be a celebrity for fame and praise, but instead to be seen as a leader/motivator for people to want to better themselves and chase their dreams,” explained Bara.

Bara’s story and determination with his hobbies are inspirational. Bara’s story shows how he rose up from nothing and became his better self because of what he loves to do.
