5 Oscar-Buzz Films You Need to See from 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

With the weather reaching chilling lows, it is more the reason to snuggle up and watch a movie. Oscar season is right around the corner and there are already a few movies that are stirring up some chatter, especially since Golden Globe nominations were just announced on Thursday. Whether you prefer suspense, romance or even comedy, I think we can all agree 2013 has been a great year for movies.  Check out the top five movies that I think we’ll see getting Academy Award nominations on January 16.

1. Gravity

Okay, now I doubt any of you are surprised that this year’s blockbuster, Gravity made the list. I will admit that I haven’t made it out to see this flick, but judging from the trailer, it seems to be a spellbinder. Plus, the fact that the leads are Sandra Bullock and George Clooney definitely doesn’t hurt when it comes to Oscar buzz. I would be more surprised if this one didn’t get a slew of nominations.

2. American Hustle

This movie starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper may give some viewers a little Déjà vu (Silver Linings Playbook anyone?). But I can whole-heartedly say I cannot wait until it hits theaters on December 18.  I will be in line at the Pearl eagerly awaiting my ticket and here’s why: Jennifer Lawrence is one of the leads, it’s a period film set in the 70s and 80s and it has been a while since we have had a good old-fashioned crime drama. Check out the trailer, it will not disappoint.

3. Blue Jasmine

Having seen my first Woody Allen film this past summer, I finally understand why his movies get such critical acclaim. His films combine comedy, smarts and drama in a way that is not seen from other writers and directors. Like many other Allen films, this movie seems to be a lot about nothing and everything at the same time. It tells the story of a rich Manhattan socialite now in poverty and what happens once she starts living with her sister in San Francisco. I think we have all seen movies like this before, however Woody Allen does have a way of putting a fresh spin on things.

4. 12 Years A Slave

I already really like this movie for a few reasons. I love history and anything taking place around the Civil War era and this movie clears the common misconception that all African-Americans at this time were slaves. 12 Years A Slave is based on a true story and sheds a light on America’s cruel history.

5. Captain Phillips

Now don’t get me wrong: I, like every other person enjoys watching Forrest Gump or Philadelphia, but there has to come a day when the Oscars are not flooded with an array of Tom Hanks movies. But I couldn’t deny the fact that Hanks has had two Oscar-worthy movies out this year: Captain Phillips and Saving Mr. Banks. This film focused on the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the hijacking of a U.S. flagged American cargo ship off the coast of Somalia. I will admit: When I saw the trailer to this film, I was hooked. The plot is gripping and full of suspense and action. This is a film I’m sure a range of people would enjoy, including members of the Academy.

Now, I’ve given you five movies I’m sure you will see at the Oscars next year. But hey, you don’t have to take my word for it. Take a day to go to the movies and indulge on some soda and popcorn. Watch these movies for yourself and then wait and see who actually made the list for nominations.
