Why It’s Okay To Be Single

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

So you have those post-Valentine’s day feels…well I’ve come to realize over my past 20 years of being single, that it’s not all bad. I’ve had times where I was looking for a relationship, but I either got turned down, things fizzled out, or they weren’t looking for a relationship at the time. Looking back, I’m okay with how things turned out, and I’m okay with being single. Here are some reasons why:

1. Lack of time. Somedays, I barely have time to even check my phone. During the school year, I lack time for anything except school, work, and friends. In a relationship, there is another person you have to make sure you have time for.

2. Free time is your time. I’m the type of person who needs alone time. During the school year I feel like I’m constantly on the go. I like to have time where I shut my phone off, ignore the world and do my own thing for a whole day. I like to go out and drive around aimlessly blasting and dancing to my music, and go out to eat by myself at my favorite restaurants. Sometimes, I like to spend a whole day in bed reading a book. Being single has allowed me to do whatever I feel whenever I want, on my lazy days.

3. Spoiling yourself. I love to save my money and rarely splurge on anything. However, being single allows me to have more money to go out to eat with friends or buy that cute, new shirt in my favorite store. This Valentine’s Day I spoiled myself with candy and a movie in bed. I didn’t have to worry about spoiling anyone else or having to get dressed up to go out.

4. You’re young. We have such a long road ahead of us, and plenty of time to be in a relationship. We should enjoy our time being in college, and do whatever makes us happiest.

5. Go on dates. When you’re single, you have the ability to go on all kinds of dates. You may meet someone in class, in the coffee shop, or even when you’re out with your friends. Even if it doesn’t work out, you have the opportunity to meet so many new, interesting people.

6. You learn so much about yourself. In my time being single, I have learned so much about myself as a person AND I know exactly what I will be looking for in a significant other when the time comes.

One day, when you least expect it, someone special is going to walk into your life. Until then, enjoy yourself, rock that independence girl!
